Anybody know what sort of chemicals might eat away at / etch the enamel on porcelain enameled cast iron?
I pulled out my dutch oven last night and it looked like it had gotten splashed with something. White/gray residue on the lid, and a spot on a side handle.
Go to rinse it off...and it is still visible when it dries. Scrub more aggressively, still there. Get out the barkeep's friend...still there.
When I let it fully dry and run my finger over it, I can almost feel a dip in the enamel where the spots were. Like they have been slightly eaten away and left with a matte finish.
No idea what caused this. Probably too late to reverse on this pot, but I certainly don't want it to happen again. Besides random household and kitchen cleaners, I don't even know what would have been anywhere near this pot...I did make use of some acetone a couple of weeks ago, but even if it splashed on the pot, it would have evaporated so fast that it shouldn't matter (and I don't think it could harm enamel).
