A good design uses negative space at least as strongly (and usually more so --- look at your first example) as the objects themselves. In general, centering things is a great way to make them look boring and is generally lazy or uninformed design. There are also little flourishes (like the smaller words) that don't really add to the design, and seem arbitrary. --Andre

Very good documentary on arguably the most versatile font of the last 75 years. It's a starting point for modern design aesthetic. Its ubiquity is part of its charm and its curse. I love the German designer Eric Spiekermann, who absolutely hates the font. Comic sans, other than CollegeHumor.com and webpages designed by high school students, is a one-note joke of a font.

Make sure you increase the linespacing a little bit over the default --- it will make it much more readable. I saw a sign today that used Arial. Couldn't believe my eyes.

The reason Helvetica is used so often is because is it so totally is what it is. And for the kind of purpose Helvetica was designed for, it really can't be improved upon.

Word.

Calibri
Helvetica
Verdana

Futura looks good, need to DL that one. M$ and their lack of or duplication of fonts is lame.

I absolutely hate Times New Roman.

Tangentally related: who was grossed out by the Papyrus subs in Avatar? My brother and I laughed the first time they appeared.

Reading them, though...remains a mystery.

Arial Unicode MS has greater line spacing. It's the best font for a browser just in case you hit sites made in a foreign language.
