Not really, You could look at it like this: in the 60s no one really got checked out for STDs because no one cared. Nowadays its common to get checked if you are active. more checks=more positive cases. Such was the case for AIDS in the 80s, it became known as a "gay disease" because mostly gays were actually getting checked, not so much for straight people.
