I stopped using cotton socks about a year ago. Polyester is much better for wicking away moisture and preventing blisters. I have about 8 pairs of these Asics socks and they are awesome:

i've never realized that socks can last.... forever.... before finding darn tough brand socks. i went through an evolution with the darn tough socks though. at first i bought the merino wool cushioned run/bike socks. now i'm on the mesh run/bike socks. here's how good their customer service is: i'm a size 10D so I bought the large sized socks (5 pairs of the mesh merino run/bike socks) and noticed that there is still excess material at the toes. I recently ran a half marathon last saturday and developed a small blister (that i didn't even notice until i was in the shower hours after the race). i emailed them with praise about how i did my whole training for the race with the socks and never experienced blisters. I was honest about the one blister i got during the half marathon and attributed it to the extra material, but it was my fault for being in-between sizing and buying their socks in bulk before trying out their medium size. they offered to replace any number of their socks (even the older thick cushioned merino wool socks i had) with the medium sized versions to try them out fit wise. And if they fit better then they'll replace any other of their socks necessary.

I can recommend X-socks, they are thicker and work well. The shirts they make are also good.

I haven't heard of x-socks before, but they look interesting. Quick research shows $40-60/ pair, which seems extreme for socks. Anyone know where to get them for less than retail?

They go for about €10-20 per pair here depending on type. That should equal $15-30, not much more. EDIT: Try backcountry.com, those prices seem better.

I also found this article on several different running socks.
