Help me identify this dog! - Page 3

When I am ready to buy a dog, I will be looking in the classifieds of a rural Saskatchewan newspaper for a $50 puppy whose owner has no idea what breed it is.

Mine have one adopted (found on the street, actually), and one pure-bred. Both are cute as can be, and both are poorly behaved.

I prefer adopting though, and plan to do that with >50% of the dogs I'll ever have. Too many unwanted dogs out there, you're doing a good thing rescuing one whenever you can. I can understand wanting a particular breed, and it's tough to find them young sometimes, so breeders are okay too. But stay away from petshop dogs, for all the reasons others have mentioned.

Got my lab/whippet/other mix from the local humane society ($35 "special price"). Pretty skittish around strangers, but mind-bogglingly intelligent. Crate-trained in about 20 minutes, walks off-leash readily, perfect temperament.

It's a H57 which will grow to be butt ugly but very intelligent. Pay your money and take your choice. Pictures and regular reports required should you succumb.

Our family's pets came from, in the case of our now gone older dog, owners giving away free puppies through the classifieds, in the case of our cat who is the same age as the older dog was, from a friend who's cat had a litter. And in the case of our younger and now only dog, from an animal rescue program when she was around 4 months old. We also had a puppy follow a neighbor home who lived with us for a few weeks while we looked for the owner, he's now being spoiled rotten by my aunt and uncle.

The only one that cost us any money at all (for coming home, our older dog had some bad hip problems), was our current dog, the rescue people had an adoption fee that's really mainly to make sure you're serious about taking care of the pet, and she is one of the most loving and loyal dogs you will ever find.

Adopt. There are tons of dogs out there that need your help, and they'll love you just as much.

$4k? Jesus that's absurd

I'd be careful of that, sighthounds tend to bolt after critters and don't like stopping

I would guess a King Charles Spaniel. And for a toy dog (which I usually despise), they are pretty frikin cute, even full-grown but quite pricey.

I was initially very cautious of this, but she seems to be mostly critter apathetic. Cats and birds are of no concern, but squirrels require an intense pointing stance until I tell her to "sit" or "go."

I get the sense that she was at some point trained for bird hunting (I got her at ~8 months) but didn't take to it and may have been subsequently mistreated. Damn shame, but since my urban hunting needs for her are limited to killing the ladybugs in my apartment, she's a good choice.
