Looked up the ones mentioned and it kind of seems as a mix of the two. Saw this dog overseas and my GF loved it but I can't seem to find something similar

Do not buy this dog. It will cost you thousands in vet bills and serious heartache.

Lefty, are you saying that because its a Pet store dog? Or is it a breed characteristic?

Pet shop. It's hard enough to find a healthy puppy from a good breeder. The odds of finding one in a pet shop are next to impossible.

I have some friends who fell in love with with a Frenchie in a pet shop and despite everything I said they bought the dog. Five years later, the dog is crippled due to a spine malformation (three operations did nothing), has a cognitive disorder due to the spine, incontinence and is blind in one eye. My modest guess is that they have spent 25K on keeping this dog alive.

I can't visit any longer as it just breaks me up to watch this dog hobble around their apartment dragging his leg and trailing feces. The time has long passed to put this dog down but they can't because they love him so.

So to answer the OP's question - expect to pay anywhere from 15K - 30K on this puppy.

I know this probably doesn't make much logical sense and makes me a big p*ssy, but I f*cking loathe pet stores, and would love to see a law prohibiting the sale of animals at pet stores. The conditions they keep these animals in, and as you point out the awful condition of most of them, is pathetic. They prey on emotion (aww this poor little puppy let's give him a home... only so he can be replaced by the next sad-eyed bugger) and encourage poor pet ownership. I get worked up every time I go in to buy dog food.

OK, sorry, had to get that off my chest.

+1 to what lefty said..

Must say I've never seen puppies or kittens sold in pet stores around these parts. Probably a law against it or something.

Pet shop puppies are becoming less and less frequent but there still is a lot of money to be made from that "doggie in the window."

Douglas, can you find another shop? If you took your business to another retailer at least you'd have a clear conscience. There are a lot of shops that only sell high-end food and no livestock.

My family adopts all our dogs from the pound and they all turn out fantastic.

Some neighbors of mine bought a Soft-Coated Wheaten from a pet shop. Contrary to my expectations, they seem to be satisfied with it, haven't had any major medical problems that I'm aware of, and the dog is now at mid-life (I think). That said, I agree with your advice on this as a general matter--wouldn't dream of buying a puppy from a pet shop.

There's something really sick about keeping a dog alive in that condition. Real love is knowing when to say goodbye, however hard it may be, and sending the dog out of the world with an easy, dignified death.

Don't buy a dog because it looks cute - all puppies do. Go down to your local shelter and ask about adopting. If they don't have a good fit for you, just wait. Let them know what your lifestyle is and what type of dog (in general) you are interested in.

There's a Petland near my house that has protesters every weekend. It kills me to wander in there and see the $4k puppies trying to walk on metal grating.

Other than that shops actually selling animals are the domain of the declining mall (the one in your city with four t-shirt airbrush shops and one selling knockoff sports gear), AFAICT.

I'm not against puppies or purebreeds but a toy puppy in a petshop is a disaster waiting to happen.

OP, if your GF wants a cute dog, she's going to have to do a lot of leg work. Assuming that puppy is some kind of Cavalier cross, here's a site of the shitstorm of health problems you can expect from a poorly bred Cav: http://www.cavalierhealth.org/overview.htm.

Good luck.
