the philly cheesesteak is pretty great, too. i'm not a molecular guy, but i've had some great dishes there. OTOH, you could just settle in with a big plate of jamon iberico de bellota (probably about the same price). fyi: if you really want the modernist experience, reserve in the Ssam bar. it's a set menu, all weird stuff and amazing. I think it's around $100 to $125 pp and totally worth it once a year.

i ate their thursday. going for lunch tomorrow. all the little plates are great. the bacos are good ... they're big juicy sandwiches, essentially. the "shrubs" are interesting and i like them. dessert: panna cotta. and if they have it, the rice pudding is killer. it's a happy place.

Very much enjoyed Baco Mercat. Nice room, loud but friendly vibe. Loved the small plates - I was with my niece who is in a new phase where she doesn't eat anything with 4 legs, so I didn't get to try whole swaths of the menu, but the vegetable small plates were all great. Also had the shrimp baco, and the seared albacore in a Moroccan style preparation - both excellentt. Didn't like the raw yellowtail, which came served on a pile of guacamole - a big bland, over-gooey mess. The best thing I can say about it is that I'm anxious to go back and try about a dozen more things. If it was closer to my office I'd lunch there all the time.

Ate at saam bar a couple months ago. It was good and relative to similar meals was not too expensive - dessert is entertaining. And to the point - get ham as many ways as you can.
E - Andres' chefs table in Vegas (at Jaleo) was about twice as much, but it was also about twice as good.
Going to eat at saison (in SF) this weekend - kind of excited but the 250 ticket is kind of annoying given that a lot of reviews say you dont get enough food.

just got back, in fact. yeah, it's a great, casual place. it's not fine dining and every item doesn't always work. but at a top price of about $12 (maybe a little more for that fabulous ham), it's just a lot of fun. i can't quite put my finger on what style it is ... for a while i thought the chef must be filipino because of the quirky blending of european and asian flavors. nah, he's just a kid from san antonio (who is opening a tex-mex bar around the corner this fall).,

i must be the only person in LA that wasn't completely thrilled with the philly cheesesteak at bazaar. went with a non-pork/beef eater so all that ham was out of the question unfortunately. still, the shrimp, chicken and dates, tortilla de patatas, uni steamed buns, and foie gras cotton candy were awesome

have to go back to baco, loved that place

To the OC heads (and LA too if you've been)...
My girl's birthday/anniversary is coming up soon so I gotta take her somewhere nice for dinner. She is a huge fan of Disneyland so I'm thinking of taking her to Napa Rose at the Grand Californian. The last time I went there was years ago, and back then I thought it was excellent (this was before I really had a palate for fine dining). That said, would you guys recommend it? I checked a sample menu online and it looks like entrees are like $40-$50, for example. My other options are places like Animal, Ink, Red O, etc...but I just thought this had that added bonus of being at Disneyland. But if you think Napa Rose is not worth it then the surrounding area doesn't really matter.

In other non-lame-GF talk, did anyone get to hit up Plan Check before they got rid of that Stussy Burger? Akaushi beef, jalapeno escabeche, cheese, smokey bacon, battered onion straws, “knowledge” sauce (WTF?) & crunch bun...it was pretty amazing. From what the waitress told me, the chef should be able to recreate it, as all the ingredients are available (the Stussy fries - chorizo gravy, fried egg, and chile - are not though)

I've never seen it mobbed before. If you're into cavair it's obviously worth a trip.

finally made it to Din tai fung...man that is good eats. crowded and long waits though.

noodles are super fresh, i loved the rice cake noodles as well as the soup dumplings, naturally.
