It's not that I was expecting Burgers, I just remember loving it the first time I went. Not that I was let down this past time, it was good, but I just wasn't quite as impressed.

Thanks @foodguy and @lawyerdad and everyone else who chimed in re: my fam dinner. The Factory Kitchen unfortunately could not accommodate us - so we ended up at Alimento. I don't know terms that judges on Top Chef use so I'm just going said the food was amazing. Without further ado:

Escolar Crudo - eggplant, fennel pollen, mollica

Pig in a Blanket - mortadella, spelt pastry, brovada, stracchino

Lamb Belly - chickpea pancake, fennel, mint, tomato, fiord gardo

Yellowtail Collar Affumicato - potatoes, capers, crema acida

Squid Ink Radiatori - red wine-braised squid, mussels, peas, dried tomatoes

Bollito Misto

American Rag at 75% selection seemed a bit less than normal and SAs seemed extra bitchy for some reason

Yeah - this season AmRag was really lacking, even before the sale began. A while back an SA told me that they "forgot" to order Geller and Engineered Garments for the season. Things are looking up for the next season though

Went to Ohshima saturday night and it was undoubtedly superb, the best I've had. Blew nana san away for the same price, no brainer since I blacklisted the latter.

I had fish I haven't had before and every piece was prepared deftly by shige san. Highly recommend you guys to go there, I was impressed.

Also creatures of comfort sample sale is ok, two bins by checkout for men. Some patrik ervell, Dana lee, gitman shorts / shirts, MHL, acne, Norse jeans etc. ok price at 70% off you just have crazy bitches rip stuff out of your hands and prevent you for digging past top of bin since they throw everything you move aside back into bin when they realize it's mens stuff

I did Ciclavia yesterday, braving the brutal heat. Ate several things along the way. Had a very good tostada de ceviche mixta from a truck at the East LA Civic Center. Late in the day we wandered into the GCM, which was predictably packed with the cycle route passing by on Broadway, but the line in front of Tacos Tumbras a Tomas was manageable. I'd never eaten there and, not being that hungry, just ordered two tacos, one of the famous trompa and one of carnitas. First of all - the tacos there aren't priced at $3 because of the new posh surroundings at the GCM, they're $3 because they're triple the size of a normal taco. Two was more than I could dream of eating. Second, the trompa wasn't at all what I expected. I thought it would be a semi-crunchy fried cartilage kind of thing. It's actually more of a stewed cartilage, it looks disgusting, like slimy sliced discs of fat. But it tastes fantastic - it has the texture of very soft meat, like short ribs or tongue, very consistent. It's insanely rich - not something to eat every day. The carnitas were also excellent. I'm prefer the typical LA style small taco, but they give you extra tortillas. Whatever you order just get one and make a couple tacos out of it.

i cannot even imagine eating a taco de trompa with the kind of weather we had yesterday. i was judging kcrw's pie competition -- i did 150 fruit pies, outdoors -- and that was beyond my ability. taco de tromp is great on a cold rainy day, though. just like the tripe milanese from maccheroni republic across the street. can't wait for cold weather.
