Got a res for this Saturday, but all this talk on Plan Check and looking at their menu is making me rethink my plans....

kind of a dorky crowd, you get the fobs from down the street, some dirtbag college crowd and some fake hipsters there it's quite an amalgam

Adding to all this food talk -
Just got out of a show at Upright Citizens Brigade and grabbed a bite at The Oaks - seriously, that place can do no wrong.

Even though I live very close I don't really hang out there ... and I have always been there with friends so really didn't pay much attention but I know what you mean. I think it's mostly the influx hipster crowd as there have been a lot of new apartments built in the area and the whole Sawtelle district is changing a bit. It's predominantly Japanese (which is why I like it) but rents are going up, hipsters are fucking everywhere and one of my favorite places has already closed and moved because it's gotten too expensive.

I think they need to send out a ninja squad on a hipster killing cull to restore balance in the neighborhood.

Haven't been in a while, but with that caveat my take was that it's a good place to go with a few friends and share a bunch of plates. Stronger on a variety of interesting flavors and preparations than on nailing each entree in a way that would make it really satisfying as a whole meal. I remember being pretty happy with whatever house-developed cocktail I had, but unfortunately I've forgotten what it was.

If you can get one of the booths in the back, that's probably the best place to sit.

For what it's worth -- say if somebody wanted to go to Plan Check but it was too stupid-crowded -- I'm a big fan of Bar Hayama, which is right across the street. Good sushi and other Japanese food, nice folks, and an awesome firepit outside. Definitely try to sit by the firepit.

Great timing. I was just wondering about that place as I was walking by the other day and noticed the fire pit.

BTW I always go to plan check at lunch when it's much more manageable.

They also make foil figurines that put Gladstones's swans to shame. icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Laurel Hardware last night, good spot. Pork ribs were great, lolli pop sprouts (baked brussels sprouts), and the burger were my my favorites. Got a few other dishes, but those three were the best. Solid drink menu.

Checked out the new Unionmade at the grove today. Normally stay as far as humanly possible away from the grove, but their new spot is great, and the fact that it is kinda hidden off the main part of the Grove is nice. Better selections than their brentwood store, which really isn't that great anyway. Might now actually have a reason to go to the Grove.

Buddy wanted to go to sugarfish in brentwood last night and though it's not a michelin star spot it was decently satisfying. Only problem was the damn rice wasn't sticking together but at least the temperature was right and most of the fish was good.

Thanks for the update spence. Also noticed hayama across from PC will keep that in mind.

Forgot to mention (or did I) that I went to osteria la buca a month ago and it was very good. Service was excellent too, had the braised short rib ravioli and spicy sausage pizza with marinated radicchio I think it was. Buddy had the gnocchi with pomodoro which was alright (when is gnocchi and pomodoro ever fantastic?). Tiramisu was lighter than I was expecting but delivered flavorwise. The manager Stephen was a cool ass dude and so was the bartender. Found out the former used to smoke cigars so I went to my car and brought him a hoyo de monterrey epicure 2 to enjoy. Adding this place to my rotation.

^ Italian joint looks cool.. good reviews. I have to say I really like Sugarfish although I'm partial to the Beverly Hills location... I think it's better for some reason (it's probably the psychological effect of BH being so cool and all... you know happy.gif)
