Good alternatives to iPhone

Thread Starter
Considering switching phones. Wondering if any former iPhone users can recommend a phone that:

- Has an excellent touch based Internet GUI similar to iPhone
- Has a wide range of apps including Slype and Slingbox, both of which need to support 3g not just wifi. It is fine if this requires a crack to enable.
- Strong 3rd party app development scene
- ability to crack apps and download them for free (moral police, not interested in your opinion)
- good battery life
- tethering enabled (fine if it requires a crack to enable)
- excellent gps and google maps GUI
- easy and cheap battery replacement
- customizability

thanks.

The only phone better than the iPhone? The iPhone 3Gs. I've used Nokias, Samsungs, BlackBerrys and all sorts, but the iPhone just feels.... sorted. Everything works, every time. I hate Apple as a company and would never own one of their computers, but its hard to get away from the fact the iPhone just works best.

I'm not an ex iPhone user but a long term smartphone user. Have a look at the HTC HD2 (windows) or HTC Desire (android) - they're probably the best smartphones currently available.

If you're used to Apple's app store you'll have to get used to digging around for software from vendors but there's lots of stuff out there. http://www.xda-developers.com/ is probably the best resource for HTC phones.

What network? Carrier exclusivity is annoyingly prevalent and severely limits choices, and suggestions.

I've a Motorola Dext (I think it's called something different outside the UK). http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/GB...GB-EN.services Its an android phone with wi fi, so you should be able to get most of the functionality out of it you want. It also has a sliding keyboard.

The only phone that functions like an iPhone is....an iPhone.

I got a 32gb 3GS, pretty much the Cadillac of iPhones (until the next one comes out in a few months) and happily retired the blackberry.

Get an iPhone.

I have the iphone now, blackberry and windows mobile in the past. Iphone is the best right now, followed by BB. BB is for the most part very reliable, just not as slick and pretty as the iphone. It is better at email, has a keyboard, and much much better battery life. But otherwise, iphone is better in every other way. Windows mobile just sucks. Maybe the palm pre. It seemed though the interface has a higher learning curve than the iphone. IMO though stick to the iphone or a BB depending on your priorities for a phone.

yes the iphone is just really slick. i have never been impressed by a mobile device till now.

Why is it that every time someone asks for alternatives to X, people reply "buy X" ? :roma:

because in this case, the X is the standard right now. and nothing really compares to it currently.
