Pore Minimizers

I've been using the Biore nose strips to get rid of blackheads but I feel like all it's doing is taking them out, leaving the pores on my nose empty and exposed. Is there a good pore minimizing product someone can recommend? I have oily skin if that makes any difference.

Try drug store astringents (witch hazel, etc.).

Hi NaTionS,

I don't believe there is any way you can shrink the pores, so keeping them clean is the best option. I'm pretty happy with Jack Black's Deep Detox Clay Mask ($25 / 2 oz). About once or twice per week I apply it at the beginning of my shower and just rinse it off at the end of the shower. It really does a fantastic job of cleaning out the pores so that the large pores are not noticeable. And you can hit more parts of your face than with the Biore strips.

I'm going to try Anthony Logistics Deep Pore Cleansing Clay ($22 /4 oz) next since it's a bit less expensive and is also intended to be rinsed off after 5 or 10 minutes... I'm not going to bed with some clay mask on my face.

The Jack Black stuff, in its defense, has lasted me a few months and has been really effective, so I can't knock it's price/oz too much.

IIRC Accutane will shrink pores

I've got the same problem as you. I use the Anthony Logistics clay mask. It works great in conjunction with the AL astringent.

Thanks for the replies. The AL stuff seems to be what I'm looking for. Will give it a try.

FWIW I tried anthony clay and It didnt do a think for me.

I switched to a moisturizer, cleanser, toner and light scrub designed for my skin type and I've been happy with the results.

I've practically never had clear skin until making these changes, I tried:

Facial masks, exfoliates, proactive, ect all of it failed to make a decent change but did lighten my wallet.

So now my procedure is simple:

Hot water (not too hot!) scrub down with a white cotton towel.
Kiehls facial fuel cleanser applied to wet skin with a damp rag, build a nice lather and work on the areas that need it most. Rinse
Kiehls facial fuel scrub (its a very light scrub) every other day at the most. applied with a damp rag and worked into areas that it most. Dont over do it. Rinse
Shave
Rinse my rag out with very cold water then rinse my face off with it and cool it down with this. This will close the pores.
Air Dry
I then apply Kiehls Herbal toner for normal to oily skin, this I apply lightly over my face and neck.
I let this dry then I apply Kiehls facial fuel moisturizer, Lightly. Over-doing this has been a mistake so I dont glob it on i just put a small amount and work it in.

Oops I already ordered the AL clay mask. I'll try it out for a few weeks and if it doesn't seem to help I'll give your procedure a try. Thanks.

Everyones face is a little different so it may work for you.

Yeah, I have a similar procedure as skinnygoomba, but I just use the clay every 1-2 weeks as well. You can't just use the clay, you have to do all the steps SG mentions as well.

If the size of your pores are naturally that size you can not get them any smaller since pore size is a genetic trait.

That's true, the only way to make pores appear smaller is by keeping them clean. Using a BHA product is the easiest way to do this; in concentrations of 2%, Beta Hydroxy Acid exfoliates inside the pore (rather than the outer layers of skin) in order to dislodge and clean out any gunk that's making your pores appear larger.

Facial masks also help but work best when used with a BHA product. I've written an article with product recommendations here as well as a review of the Clinique Pore Minimizer which is basically a clear silicone gel used to conceal your pores if they're noticeably large.

Exfoliate your pores at home. Use products that contain gentle scrubbers to deep clean your pores. Complete this procedure once weekly for an added pore minimizing boost. Avoid scrubbing your skin raw when using exfoliants to prevent skin irritation and damage to underlying blood vessels.

I try to use the Biore strips about once a week and then use the Stridex salicylic acid wipes afterwards. Pores on nose still get gunked up so fast, though.
