$40kish to drop on a car/SUV, no clue where to start... maybe X5?

Any ideas for a car/SUV in the $40k range (prefer a little less but $40k should work, plus I am hoping to get a little bit of a deal since dealerships around here arent moving shit)

Was thinking about an BMW X5 or 3-series, Audi Q7, A5, or A4, maybe a few year old range rover, MB C-Class, E-Class coupe, M-Class SUV...

but really leaning toward the BMW X5 xdrive 3.0i (09/10)

What aspects are important? Gas mileage, comfort, luxury features, performance, cost of upkeep, sexy looks, size?

all of the above, just from an honest price standpoint and from reviews/pics, I have narrowed it down to:
MB c-350; c-300; ml-350
BMW X5 x-drive i3.0
Audi A4; Q5

I am obiousally going to go look in person/ test drive but just wanted some opinions before hand, the nicest car I have ever owned prior to this was a Honda Civic.

Are you looking new or used? 40k is not going to get you some of these vehicles. We just looked at the Q5, you should be able to score a nicely equipped one for a little over 40k. ML350 is going to be mid 50s, nicely equipped. I'm not up on the BMW models, but remember the X5 I looked at last year was mid 70s.

I have began to look at local dealer inventory and the 2010:
MB c-300 & Audi A4 can be had very nicely equipped for $32k (2009 even less)
MB c-350 & Audi Q5 same for $37-$40k (again 2009 even less)
MB ml-350 & BMW X5 x-drive i3.0 $40k-$46k

There is no x5 model that runs in the mid-70's perhaps maybe it was a M-series or X-6 you were looking into.

I am open to either used (i.e., 1 year old) or new, would actually prefer a 1 yr. old so I am not paying for the "brand new" premium.

How did you like the Q5?

How the hell can a "nicely equipped" A4 be had for $32k, when it starts at $31.5?!?! That must be one huge dealer discount... Where are you getting these prices? The X5 starts in the high 40s, and that with nothing equipped. A loaded, top-of-the-line X5 will run you 70s, at least.

I'm eyeing the cross-over Volvo XC60, which gets great reviews.

Well, first of all, no one pays MSRP. Invoice price for an A4 is $29.2k - assuming his trade-in is worth $3k, he's looking at approximately $5,800 in options before he hits the $32k mark.

Similarly, invoice price for an X5 starts at $43.7k - again, assuming his trade-in is worth $3k, he may be able to get away with a base X5 with SOME options for low $40k.

not looking at the "top of line" x5's looking at the i30's.

As for the A4, I didnt want to dig through local dealer inventory but here are a few examples from the Bay...

not really fully loaded, but locally a nicely equipped one can be had for about $35k or so and I am assuming $3k or so trade in.

Cars are so fucking cheap in the US.

I agree, no one should pay MSRP. However, trust me, a nicely equipped ML350 is no where near "40-46k" even after harsh negotiating. Go to www.mbusa.com. Build an ML350 4matic with the P2 package, partronic, running boards, leather guts, metallic paint, lighting package. With shipping, 59, 915.

Anyone that says they are getting this for 46k is simply lying.

Q5. Nicely built, MSRP around 43k. Nice V-6, nice ergonomics. Cargo area small for it's class, but seating is great. I highly approve for that price point.

also anyone know if paying full in cash will get you anymore of a deal than financing or does it not really matter either way?
