Yeah, I took the 5 up to Monterrey and cut across the 198 to the 101 a few months back because I got sick of the 5 really fast. On my way back, I took the 1 to the 101 back, which was a couple more hours but much more worth it. Edit: Was your last sentence a remark about the proposed high speed rail?

I did the drive once before, and was hoping to find a better route, or at least a less boring one. The highlight of that trip was driving through AL and seeing the "Holland's Gin Church of Christ". I didn't see any town named Holland's Gin, so it looked like it was an endorsement like the Tostito's Fiesta Bowl. But I guess not since Holland Gin is a type not a brand.
