Hi guys, I just bought my first suit, and Im unsure of the fit. I think its ok, but maybe a bit too big in the shoulders and definitely too big in the waist. I took some pictures with my phone in the dressing room, but they are dark and the quality is what you get from an iphone. If they are too bad I can take more. Anyways here are the pictures.

The jacket is Lauren by RL and is a size 40R. The tailor at the store said it fit good off the rack, but she was much older and was probably more conservative in fit preference than I. I also tried on a 38R and she said the shoulders were too tight. The pants are fine, I bought 2 pairs of separates that match and fit well, although they could be slightly trimmer.

So. How is the fit? My personal preference is the waist be taken in some and left at that, but i am very much a novice here. Should I exchange for a 38R? Take it to a recommended tailor and go from there? i hope to end up with a trim fitting although still somewhat conservative suit. Also, can anyone provide me with more info as far as how much the waist can be taken in on the jacket and a price range for that? and can trouser be slimmed down or no? Thanks very very much guys, once again Im a total newb at this.

Please comment and if new pictures are needed, how should they be taken and from what angles?

I am not the resident fit expert, but for starters it appears you bought a blazer and slacks - not a suit.

Length of the jacket/blazer seems fine, but for any helpful responses beyond that, I am afraid you will have to post some better pics (close up, better light, pick of the back, etc.).

I would try on the 38R. Shoulder pads poke out a little and then bunch as it sloped down. Put on the 38R and take a well lighted picture... we can give feedback on that as well. It's not too bad, but since you're asking now, we might as well get it perfect the first time around.

Also, a tip... try on different brands. Each maker designs the shoulders differently and not every brand will fit equally well. The usual rule of thumb is if at first glance you think something may be off, then you gut is probably right.

Given the width of your head, I think the shoulder width works for you. I'd stick with the 40R, and maybe spend a few bucks on light waist supression.
