do you have any pain with the ruptured disks (sciatica specifically)? If so, how did you work through it. I'm three months past a herniation, and I'm still not there yet. Don't want to go under the knife though

I never approached your level Kunk, but I took a few sports much farther than the average Joe. When I was a kid and heavily into weights, I split a bicep fascia doing forced reps. My right knee is on borrowed time (losing weight has really helped though). Right shoulder is a bit crackly. I have to say, I do wish I'd gone a little easier sometimes. I'm going to start light/medium lifting again this year and I'm going to be very gentle on my joints.

As I've gotten older, I've come to realize moderation has its points. I keep telling myself, I don't need to look like a bouncer again, I just need to stay fit so I can enjoy another 40 years of foie gras.

I'd like to know the same thing. I popped a disc awhile ago, and now I can't run or jump rope without paying for it later. Sucks, too, as I was seeing the results I wanted until I got sidelined by that. Now, I have to do stretches in the morning for my hips, otherwise, the left side tightens up too much, and then that causes my back to spasm. Go to gym sparingly nowadays. Lost a lot of mass, my friends who see me occassionally have actually commented on it. They say I lost weight.

Different aesthetic, not everybody wants to have your size. Makes finding clothes that fit that much harder.

i just worked through, inactivity seems to be the worst thing for me.

I don't want to get old.

Don't fuck with this stuff, go in and see a Dr. If you don't get good solid answers that work, go see another. This shouldn't be happening. It could also be that you need to develop the muscles around your knee before attempting to run. Be wary of surgery. Good luck!

I'm only 30, so I'm not as old as you dinosaurs.

+1 with the kunk. Just Do It.

At 30, you can be at a 110% of where you were at in your early 20s unless you were a pro or collegiate athlete. I don't know why you are setting the bar low. I am 43 and I see no reason why I cannot exceed my early 20s in the next couple of years. In fact that is precisely my goal.

Either your early 20s were not that great or you will need chemical enhancement. All things being equal, at 43, your body just isn't the same and isn't making all the hormones it once did. Not saying you can't get majorly fit at 43 but to think you can exceed the level of your early 20s only means you weren't that fit in your early 20s.

Nothing personal, it's just biology.

I agree with the biology part, but unless you were really really good in your 20s (hence my reference to college/pro athlete), with today's knowledge on how to maximize your performance (within your genetic constraints, of course), you should be able to do better than what you did 10 or 20 years ago. This is certainly true for me, YMMV. I was a decent athlete and in good shape in my undergraduate years and I played rugby a lot during my graduate school years through my early 30s but I certainly didn't know much about how to structure a decent physical fitness program to maximize my potential.

Now, I feel that I can do much much better and I look back at my earlier years as "wasted" years, or at the very least, a time when I could have been much better.

I see what you're saying and don't disagree. You probably will need chemical help though, which I don't really endorse, but each to his own.

I was watching Lance struggle this weekend in an early season multi-stage race. Aging is a bitch!

Aging is a bitch, but 32 is not that old.

exercise frequently
try to eat healthy

I've never been one for rote exercises. Running, weights, whatever is too repetitve for me...and my joints. Something with style and form can help, both physically and mentally. At least as your sole form of exercise. Martial arts, surfing, capoira, tard bo. Joke there. Whatevs. I skateboard. Probably not for all but keeps me sane and fit for over 20. Find something fun where you can avoid thinking about doing the same shit over and over.

By over 20 I meant that's how long I've been riding. Just to clarify, I ain't a youngun.

Bosu Ball sit-ups + cable crossovers + Livestrong bracelets = Elite

Any man in the gym for an aesthetic purpose can fuck right off.

i turned 40, was crazy overweight. but, i just managed to get this incredible 26 yo to marry me. somehow. anyway, i decided that i needed to live long enough and be fit enough to enjoy her.

i decided to find a solution to my nagging sciatica and get fit.

i went here: http://performancehealthcenter.com/ and i get a combination of chiropractic, ART, and electric stim. i have been going since end of january, and eating with discipline, and cycling, walking, and doing yoga since feb 1. i have lost 25 lbs, 5 inches off my chest, 6 inches off my waist, and 5 inches off my thighs since then.

i highly recommend talking with someone who knows how to get stuff done for you. it changed my life. completely.

i dont know how many places do ART, but it has been a life changer for me and my sciatica. i haven't had any pain for 4 weeks or so. and i was at a place where i couldnt stand up straight for more than a couple minutes at a time.

life is short. just ask the old guy.
