If you take care of yourself I don't think you really start having a hard time physically until your mid to late 40's. And nowadays, they have high-level pro boxers that age, when 50 years ago, 30 was over the hill.

Just rejoined a gym last week. I definitely don't have the energy and strength now that I had when I was in my early 20s. But, hopefully after a few months of hard work, I'll be 90% of where I was before.

I'm only 30, so I'm not as old as you dinosaurs.

+1 with the kunk. Just Do It.

Holy **** dude you're 30? My condolences. If it helps, you never come off as a geezer.

I am 39 and last September I started to go to a trainer twice a week and run/elliptical/bike once or twice a week. I changed my eating habits a bit as well (I eat a bit less than I used to).

I have lost almost 15 pounds and am the lightest I have been in 15 years.

I am not and have never been an athlete. If I can do it...anyone can.

cod liver oil is great, as is olive oil.

I take a dessert spoon of each, each day. They really help in my experience.

I've had lots of aches and pains from doing lots of sport and exercise when I was younger.

If you've had an injury in the past, in the intervening years when you didn't exercise as much, the supporting muscles will have wasted somewhat. That plus starting a high impact activity such as running may have caused the flair up.

Once you get a niggle in one place, it generally causes problems elsewhere, especially with running. An ankle problem can cause back pain etc, as the original injury throws your gait off.

These are just my experiences though! I would advise going to see a physio. Their minor exercises can seem frustrating and somewhat silly, if you've been used to working hard in sports, but they do work very well.

They will probably advise you to switch to none impact exercise for a time too

Once the physio has corrected the knee weakness etc, you can slowly build up to running.

I've also found that a lot of gym cardio causes my injuries to niggle - because gym cardio is v v repetitive (and boring

)- you never vary your plane of motion, so a slight problem is exagerated.

I have found hiking on good rough uneven ground very good for sorting out ankle niggles - the uneven ground strengthens everything up, and is so varied it is not repetitive enough to cause niggles.

Though I realise you may not have access to hiking areas! So if you must be couped up in a gym, the physio will probably advise varying what you do a good deal

[soapbox]

Every time I see you say things like this and read about what you do to yourself I just have to shake my head a little bit.

Of course, we all want different things in life and pushing yourself in the gym obviously brings you pleasure and a sense of accomplishment but I'm going to be very surprised if you don't really regret it in a few years.

I don't see how it would be any worse than the regret from being a yuppie ***** who played it safe the whole time, but I'm just a caveman.

Exercise is probably still better for you than not, even with kunk's 'conditions'.

On topic: I'm at an adult education centre thing at the moment because I never finished school and felt I needed to to become somebody, and most of the people here are around 16-18 while I'm 21, there are ofcourse many exceptions but the vast majority are within that bracket. It's slightly depressing.

Oh and sometimes I end up leaving this place at school hours, so I get a good overview of the primary school/high school peoples that take the train, needless to say it makes me long for my times of being a carefree ignorant teenager. But I guess that's why we need to develop mentally, because if we don't, well aren't we just the same person we were 10 years ago with slightly less sand in the hourglass? That's a depressing thought.

At this point in my life I think I have come to accept that a knee brace will always be a part of my life. I've contemplated some surgery but..............Age and abuse has left it's mark. I elevate and ice often, but I also spend a lot of time falling in empty pools, so I guess maybe it is all my doing.
