Well, once upon a time I knew these guys, who knew these guys, who said they'd heard . . . that one of the advantages of getting stoned over getting drunk was the lack of caloric intake. Of course, that theory doesn't account for the munchies . . .

this is correct. its a myth that beer makes you gain weight because of the carbs. it is actually much worse usually to switch to hard liquer to lose weight. you gain wait because of the amount of ethanol you consume, not carbs.

actually i drink it in Vietnam. Never really did at home - they have a very very small domestic share, its exclusively an export beer. Im friends with all the sales guys here so tend to get it free and free-ish. Its quite a good tap beer. if you were asking me the 'what would i like to drink' of the Australian beers, the answer is easy, Coopers Sparkling Ale. Unfortunately Andrew never posted 'it cooperssparklingales self-reliance and independence'

That's one reason why the Rhone, esp the South, has long been my favorite source of red wine. I envy you being able to get Charvin for less than $30, though; it costs twice that amount stateside.

I'm sure I'd enjoy reading your tasting notes, if only I understood French.

All of the hard core alkies I've known were pretty thin. Most very thin.
Their secret seems to be - a diet of only drinking. Get smashed before you can go to dinner. Crash. Get up, have some dog hair, go to work. drinks for lunch. Get smashed again after work.

Several of those folks could put in a real day's work in the field on that program.

As funny as it sounds, it is actually true. It is not so much the alcohol that makes you fat, but the stuff you eat afterwards. You should not eat any fats 3 hours before and after drinking alcohol. Because your liver is busy detoxifying the alcohol it will not be able to break down the fats. This means that you will store all of the fat that you consume. Cheers!
