Condo smells of smoke because of other unit, anything I can do?

I just moved into a new condo and the bedroom often smells of smoke because of a neighbouring unit. I'm unable to track down where it comes from. I don't even know if its from this floor.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Do I have any recourse? I don't know if I can have any influence on another person's enjoyment of their unit.

Jurisdiction is Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

Try the neighbouring unit.

Thank you, that's entirely unhelpful.

Is the smoke wafting in through your window or otherwise?

You could hire some kind of inspector to see if the insulation is up to code, if not make the seller to fix the issue.

block the air vents just in your room?

There is not actual smoke coming in, it's just the smell that is strong. What's strange is each unit has its own heating/AC so I didn't think any of the vents were shared.

You just moved in. Pay a visit to your neighbours to say hello and when they open the door -- does it smell like smoke?

Even if it does what is he gonna do? If my neighbors asked me to stop smoking in my place I'd tell them to stop eating and fucking in theirs and then we'd talk.

I don't know what he's gonna do, maybe he's gonna kill the party responsible. At least he'll know which one to kill to make it stop.

You're really thinking of legal action? Be a man and talk to them.

That fucking sucks, dude. I've lived in places where smoke came in from other units and it pissed me the hell off. Is there a tight seal around the door to the unit? There's sometimes a natural airflow into units from the hall.

are we talking about like, cooking smoke, or what? definitely talk to the neighbour. i live in toronto right now - isn't indoor smoking against the rules of most condo associations?

There is nothing you can do. They are within their rights. Cigarette smoke is insidious. I hope you didn't buy.
