Bud Light Golden Wheat - Ideal College Beer

Thread Starter
This is meant for college students (who are... "21"):

I picked up a 12 pack of this over the weekend... not sure what to expect as I'm not a real Bud Light fan, but for something in a bottle and claiming to be an unfiltered beer, the price was right. This beer is a godsend, but to explain its niche I need to say a few things.

As a college student I drink a fair amount of beer, and I define my beer categories as:
Ultra Cheap --- (Natty Light, Keystone Light)
Cheap --- (Coors Light, Bud Light)
Nice --- (Beer in a bottle that is $7-$10 for a 6 pack, I like Heineken, Hoegaarden, Corona, Guinness, Red Stripe, etc... )

The problem that I have is that anything besides "nice" beer tastes kind of shitty (some super shitty), but nice beer is expensive, especially in the quantities required. Nice beer can also be much more difficult to drink quickly, as sometimes it is really thick and complex.

Bud Light Golden Wheat both tastes good and is easy to drink quickly, while being priced equal to or only marginally more than regular Bud Light. Cost wise it's in the purgatory between nice and cheap, hovering at ~$1 per bottle. No, it's not nearly as cheap as natty light, but pounding natty when you're sober is a disgusting challenge.

For me, this is the ultimate chugging beer. My friends were equally amazed at how easy it is to drink. It has the watered down consistency of cheap and ultra cheap beer, with an overall flavor that isn't distasteful. On a hot day this beer might actually be refreshing.

I'm just so ecstatic about this find, you guys have to try it.

had it on tap at the local watering hole a little after it came out. I'm not a big fan of chugging, shotgunning, bonging, etc., but I can say, for a Bud Light (or a "macrobrew at all), it surprised me in the amount of flavor. Think citrus-y bud light, or perhaps a lighter blue moon. Can't say it will replace Bell's Oberon in my fridge, but if I'm feeling a little tight, I'll get a 6 of this.

You need to rethink what you consider nice beer. FWIW, I think BL golden wheat tastes surprisingly good. Reminds me of blue moon in a lot of ways.

OP - you speak to my heart. I wasnt impressed with BL HW when I first tried it, but I might give it another go this time around. I woulda never thought to use it for flip cup or beer pong, seems like it'd be filling.

When in college the taste was secondary. I lived off the keystone dirty thirty ($13!) and grew to like it. If someone had a regular domestic ($18? for a case?) they were ballin!

I never saw nice beer. It just simply didnt happen when your broke. I dont now how all these "21" year olds are getting it.

Thats a little snobby to knock on a college kid for that. He isnt gonna buy a single chimay blue label when you can get a 12 pack of Coors light for that price. Plus, Hoegaarden is still a top 3 all time for me and there is nothing wrong with corona or red stripe.

Dos Equiis >>>>>> Corona, and I don't think there's a significant difference in price

'lighter Blue Moon' makes me curious - I dig hefes and the like, but Blue Moon is too sweet and heavy to compete even as a cheap, widely available options.

I completely understand the need for cheap beer. What I don't understand is expensive, shitty tasting beer like Heineken or Corona. College kids, does it really taste good to you? I would rather drink a can of Coors than Heineken.

Kids, stop chugging beer. You want to get drunk? Buy beer which is above 6% ABV. I recommend Spaten Optimator.

Saw a commercial for this last week with a weird (unintentional?) urine subtext.

Am I the only 20 year old who's ballin' out of control and drinkin' only Chimay at all the classiest college affairs? I haven't tried Bud Light Golden Wheat, but I have a couple of bottles of Weihenstephaner kicking around that I'm gonna drink this weekend, and am absolutely certain I'm having a better experience than any BLW drinker. Find local brews that make high alcohol beers and drink that. I usually drink Unibroue beers, 8-9% alcohol, $12 for a 6 pack (this is Canada, a 24 of the cheapest beer is $24...) Spaten Optimator is a great choice to get drunk with, excellent beer...

FTFY.

There is nothing good about a budweiser product. This is simply a beer that is made to compete with Blue Moon (which is also garbage btw), and the only reason why Blue Moon was made was to try to grab a piece of the wheat beer market. It's the same for Budweiser American Ale. It is a reactive attempt to try to recapture the consumers who switched over to craft beer.

Agree, and agree some more.

LOL at Corona being a "nice" beer. Corona is shit, watery beach beer at best. I am a college student so I know that drinking on a budget is ideal, but if I am gonna drink beer its gotta be at least decent. I have tried most of the light beers at parties they were so gross I couldn't even stomach more than one. I suggest if you just wanna get drunk, get hard liquors. Get you hammered and wont make you fat. Might be a good idea for the ladies too since last time I checked a lot of "Skinny" college girls all had a gut/pudge which I find gross. Also if you can find it, this is by far the best light beer: Suntory Kin Mugi (golden wheat)

I don't think beer makes you fat... I drink the heaviest beers I can find, and as many as I can. Getting drunk and eating cheeseburgers makes you fat, and that's what like everyone does...

It's unsettling to find out not one of your cohorts knows or cares what Speyside means...let alone what a Single Malt might be. I find my alcoholic interests more closely aligned with my middle-aged yuppie neighbors who I detest--but respect--in the Rockridge area of Oakland.

Whatever the fuck this Bud Light Wheat is--I'm not going to try it to find out it's terrible. I can't wait to graduate and be unemployed so I don't have to be associated with this bullshit plebeian college student filth.

I had you up to here. Corona is worse than any cheap beer.
