meh

The apartments are really old school. Most are wallpapered and look like they haven't been renovated since 1890, except the kitchens, which look like they were done in the '60s.

And what you said about 2300 for a decent real 1 bedroom is pure rubbish unless your definition of "decent" and "real" has truly been altered from the original. And btw, negotiating on first month's free rent is an OK incentive but I recommend trying to negotiate your rent down - the following year his rent will now effectively shoot up because he bought into the whole "1 free month" deal.
That's definitely not true. I've lived in multiple places in NYC, all gotten from CL. Initially shares and then not. And in both cases, I've never had to deal with scams. The only thing about scams on CL is that they sometimes post pictures of apts that aren't really the ones you're looking at. But in reality that type of scam only exists if looking in the FiDi for whatever reason. Also, it's not that theres no fee, it's that the landlord pays the free. And you can DEFINITELY get a nice, real 1BR in a luxury doorman apartment building for $2300. West of 6th ave may be difficult to find a nice one, though you can find a real 1BR, but GV for sure. I do however agree with a poster above regarding living in the East Village or LES. It's just cooler.

Why would it be listed on Craigslist and not on streeteasy. Pick your scam: broker ad pretending to be owner, no fee apartment that is flipped as a fee rental (don't worry you won't have to pay it, it will just be hidden in your monthly rent), broker doing bait and switch, and more. There is a rare chance you'll find something but that's not the case most of the time. And it has nothing to do with the Financial District (please call it that instead of broker gobbledy gook), it's prevalent in every single neighborhood. Feel free to find a property on craigslist and not on streeteasy. Streeteasy, urbansherpa, and nybits are what the OP should be looking at. Here is also a list for the OP of landlords that gets passed around a lot on streeteasy: Excellent BIG-TIMEManhattan Rental Property Management: Rose (www rosenyc com) Related Rentals (www relatedrentals com) Equity Residental (www eqr com) TFCornerstone (www tfcornerstone com) Rockrose Management (www rockrosenyc com) [mostly chelsea, village, financial district, downtown condos] Sky Management (www skymanagement com) Glenwood Managment (www glenwoodnyc com) BLDG Management Co. 115 E 92nd St New York, NY 10128 (212) 722-4931 Brodsky Management, Inc (www brodskyorg com) Maclowe Management (www macklowe com) [condos below 60th street] Urban Associates %u2013 400 W 59th St # 3, New York, NY (212) 245-1870 Above average property management (mostly prewar lowrise to a few postwar) ATA Enterprise (www ataenterprises com) Below Average no-fee properties [aka slumlord]: Jakobson Properties (www nofeerentals com) And feel free to post a West Village true 1BR in a luxury doorman building for 2300. Even East of 7th (where it's not the west village) I would find that hard to believe. http://streeteasy.com/nyc/rentals/gr...orman,elevator Here are 1 bedrooms for rent in Greenwich Village below 2500 in elevator and doorman buildings. Some aren't true 1 bedrooms (I'd say most). Not a single one of these buildings is a luxury building. And LES as cooler? Wow...really, just wow.

Cooler and suckier are not mutually exclusive.

I'm with haganah on this one...this isn't going to happen. To pay that much for a true 1br in a doorman building, you need to be in a less desirable location.

Maybe not in a doorman building. But you can definitely find them. And I wasn't saying that it wouldn't be on streeteasy. I've actually never used street easy so I have no idea. And as far as the LES, if you like it you like it. The thing about the East Village and the LES is that it filters out people who don't like it in a very efficient way. And those of us who live there are very grateful for that fact.

Next time if you use streeteasy instead of craigslist, you'll find a place at a better price and maybe end up in a better neighborhood

Haha yeah. If I move at the end of this lease I'll check it out. BTW, wasn't trying to be a dick. There are certain parts of NYC that make sense for certain people, not that any particular one is cooler. Living in LES, I love it obviously, but NYC is NYC so it's all straight.

I hear Chelsea is an exception.

Yeah, I feel like i'll figure out where I want to be after a few months. Like other people have said, different parts of Manhattan will suit different people. I only said Greenwhich and West Village because thats what everyone has said I should look.

I also understand Roosevelt Island is quite cheap.

Only place you will find a decent 1br under 2k is UES. Downtown forget it.

Also, CL is not all scams. Just be careful and you can find steals.

I'm a "no roommates" kind of guy and it definitely limits you in this city. You can get amazing places as someone else mentioned once you get three guys in on it (you can get a really really good loft for $7000).
