What's in your Bar?

hey guys,

i'm 28 years old and since high school, i've been a beer guy. We've got a few great microbreweries in my area (one in my town) so i've been quite satisfied with chasing down the perfect pint (which i've found a few hundred times).

a few years back i got into wine. it was natural as i had gotten into cooking and wine paired nicely with a fine meal.

i order a coctail on occasion while i'm out and about and have developed a taste for them. I've kept a bottle or two of liquor around the house at times but always perfered a growler of beer and a few bottles of wine. lately though, i've been getting a little more serious about making a good coctail and keeping a small bar around for occasional entertaining, but mostly for personal use.

i thought it might be interesting to start a thread about what we all have stocked in our home bars. Some may only have a bottle or two and some will have bars that rival the best watering holes in our towns.

I'll start, with a little background. I've found that most guys on the board here seem to favor whiskey, primarily scotch. Unfortunately for me, whiskey doesn't seem to agree with me. my first liquor experience when i was 16 was a buddy smuggling over a bottle of Jack Daniels of which i drank 6 or 8 shots in quick succession before promptly passing out on the back step of the house with my head in the snow. I didn't give up though. Lately i've found a few whiskeys that i can appreciate the taste of, but still, i find it has a bad effect on me. I either get a wicked head ache a couple hours later or a vicious hangover the next morning, regardless of how much i have. Long story short, i really like Vodka and Tequila, but i'm a little tenative about whisky.

Here's my stock:

Patron Silver Tequila (in the freezer)
Juarez Tequila (for mixing)
Russian Standard Vodka (export - in the freezer)
Svedka Clementine Vodka
Jeremiah Weed Sweet Tea Vodka
Jacquins Pomegranate/Raspberry Vodka
Jacquins Vanilla Vodka
Jaimeson Irish Whiskey
Heaven Hill Bourbon
Gilbey's Gin
Bacardi Supirior Rum

Patron XO Cafe
Kaluah
Bailey's Irish Cream
Jacquins Triple Sec
Jacquins Grenadine
Tribuno Extra Dry Vermouth
Tribuno Sweet Vermouth
Regency Amaretto Da Vinci
Angostura Bitters

A range of Club Sodas and Tonics in plain and flavored varieties
Coke/Sprite
A range of juices
Roses Lime Juice
A range of mixers (Sour, Margarita, Daiquiri, Cosmo, ect. - found a great deal from an outlet grocery)
Cherrys, Limes, Oranges, Olives
Powdered Sugar

my next purchase will probably be another higher-end of tequila (not sure which one, i like Patron alot but would like to try something as good or better without all the hype) and another higher-end vodka (probably Tito's and/or Chopin and/or Ciroc).

i've got decent glassware. good tumblers, martini glasses, a veriety of wine glasses, pint glasses and some cool juice glasses i use for cordials or shots. i've got a shitty plastic Ikea shaker that's doing the trick for now but i plan to upgrade that soon. i held out on buying a nice one because there are so many industrial designers making incredibly aesthetically pleasing options i thought i would wait to bump into one i really love. i'd also like to add some ice cube trays in non-standard sizes (huge cubes and tiny cubes).

here's a quick shot of my cramped arrangement:

Scotch & empty glasses.

What's in my bar depends on who I'm serving and why I'm hosting. From that, I decide which bottles are available.

From that, there's bourbon, scotch, rum, gin, vodka, limoncello, and a few other bottles I can't recall.

I have about 8 different tequilas, 4 bourbon, 8 scotches. I replace favorites but rotate in new brands as needed. Otherwise I have a little bit of everything else. I rarely buy expensive vodka, but I will buy nice dark rum.

jo-fu, thomas, pocketsquareguy, can we get some details? i think it's safe to assume most will have the same grouping of liquor types. I'm curious what brands, how many varieties, how you lay it out, ect.

In between places right now - no decent spot to maintain a bar or liquor cabinet, so stock is rather low. That being said, currently have: Crown Royal (Canadian Whisky) Canadain Club Sherry Cask (Canadian Whisky) Glenlivet 12 (Scotch) Bombay Sapphire (Gin) Alize Blue (Girl Liquer) Absolut (Vodka) Disaronno (Amaretto) Bailey's My ideal base stock would just be Crown, Absolut and Bombay - the other stuff is random left overs I actually wish I didn't have right now (really just taking up room. But, once I have more space for an actual bar I would expect the list to expand quite a bit.

best laugh I've had all week!

This is off the top of my head and is subjec to omissions...

So, for my consumption or small gatherings of good friends who know what they're drinking:

George T. Stagg bourbon (5 bottles at the moment)
Macallan Cask Strength scotch
Zacapa 23 Rum

For smaller gatherings and good friends:

Eagle Rare 10 bourbon
Buffalo Trace bourbon
Elijah Craig 12 bourbon
Milagro Limon tequila
El Dorado 15 rum
Highland Park 12 scotch
Grey Goose (it was a gift)

Oh, block party? come on in:

Jack Daniels
Bulleit bourbon
Weller 12 wheat bourbon
Jim Beam
Beefeater gin
Plymouth gin
Bacardi rum
Malibu rum
Smirnoff vodka (flavored and plain)
Chivas Regal (again, a gift)
Crown Royal

If there's anything I forgot, it's probably in the 'block party' list. Also reserve the right to crack open a bottle just to finish it off.

- BTW: they're not on display anywhere. Locked in a closet, in fact. Long story.

I feel like I usually dont have a varied stock of similar spirits...they get finished before a new one gets bought (well...I guess that doesn't apply if they suck...then they get forced into mixed drinks at a party).

The things I do have a spread of are:
Rum:
Mount Gay Extra Old
Mount Gay Eclipse (empty but will be replunished...with US stock)
Mount Gay white rum (lame...fits in the "forced into party mixed drinks" category)
The above are all straight from the distillery and as such bottled at a slightly higher alcohol content. Some people say that it makes all the difference...I can't tell shit.

Tequila:
Corralejo Anejo
Sauza Gold (cheap party mixing...beats cuervo IMHO)

Gin:
North Shore Distillery no. 6
Seagrams (gin and tonic time...)

Vodka:
Who cares...its some bottle of shit that tastes like vodka

The liqueurs I will have to look at when I get home...I know there is some Luxardo, Midori, Homemade Coffee Liqueur, creme de cassis...

I don't have enough time to go through everything but this will give you details of three categories.

tequila

El Tesor Platinum (good but over rated IMO)
1921 Tequila (very spicy, stands up to a cigar )
Gran Centenario Anejo
Gran Centenario Reposado (the best value in a reposado and easy to find)
Don Julio blanco (probably the best deal in a high quality blanco when on sale)
Jose Cuervo Reserva de la Familia (just ok, considering its high price)
Purasangre reposado
Tequila Ocho Plata Single Estate (one of my favorites for sipping, neat)
Cazadores Reposado (used for cooking)
Sauza Gold (for volume margaritas made with mix)
Milagro Anejo Reserva Barrica Selecta

Bourbon

Bulleit
Woodford (a favorite neat)
Buffalo Trace
Jack
Barker (great on ice)
Knob Kreek Basil Hayden

Scotch

Glenmorangie 15year
Bowmore 10 year
Tomatin 12 year
Knockando 12 year
Johnny Walker Red
I don't drink scotch so these are just for guests.

I own a lot of interesting glassware, especially small glasses. After a dinner we will sometimes have a tequila or bourbon tasting with a small sampling of several brands. That way we get to compare and everyone finds something they like. It is a fun way to enjoy them.
