Neighborhood Hotels in NYC?

I used to travel to NYC on business several times a month when I was working. I generally stayed in mid-town at the Trump, the Pierre, the Mandarin, etc, so my experience has been that of a business traveller. I'm going next month with my wife to visit, and to meet with Luca Rubinacci for a fitting. I'd like to stay in another part of the city, preferably in a nice hotel in an actual neighborhood, the kind of place where one can walk to a neighborhood coffee shop for breakfast. Price for the most part isn't an issue.

60 Thompson Thompson (on Allen) Soho Grand Hotel on Rivington

The Mercer in SoHo is very nice. Soho is fun and quiet in the mornings for walking until about 11am when the shoppers come around. It also quiets down in the evenings after the majority of stores close. But it will be a very different experience than the top business class hotels. This is where Marc Jacobs lives when in NYC designing his collections.

How about SoHo House in the MeatPacking district. It is a private club but they do have some rooms that they offer, when available, to the public. It is more of a fashion and entertainment crowd. Even though the Meatpacking District has become a party destination, there are fun neighborhoods within walking distance and SoHo House has a rooftop pool that is very enjoyable on a spring day/evening.

I had a great experience at the Soho Grand last weekend. And, certainly, one of my favorite neighborhoods.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I wanted the Hotel on Rivington, but they were booked for part of the time I'm there, so we're going to stay at the SoHo Grand.
