Montreal: Where to stay for cheap?

Thinking of going to Montreal this year for my vacation with my friend from Ottawa. Where's a good place to stay close to good night-life and partying, while at the same time isn't too frou-frou fancy? Something suitable for a few 24-year-old young, professional, bachelors.

How many days would locals suggest staying? 5? 7? Main focus is to check out cool eateries (Au Pied de Cochon and St. Viateur Bagels will be must-visits) along with plenty of bar-hopping/clubbing in the evenings. Not much shopping or historic sight-seeing.

Thanks

Rent an apartment. I've used http://www.dolcevitamontreal.com/index-nofl.html

It's near a train stop, and is pretty close to downtown.

One option would be: http://www.casadelpopolo.com/contents/node/53 This would put you within easy walking distance of much partying, and especially, near to the Dieu du Ciel brewery, which you should definitely not miss if you like beer. (http://www.dieuduciel.com/) Have fun!

You can usually hotwire the Sheraton for around $89US

L'Hotel le Cantlie is quite good and affordable. Accommodating and great location.

Couple nice hostels (ya ya, very un-SF) in the downtown area, if I remember correctly. Cheap and you meet some interesting people.

If that isn't your thing, there are plenty of cheap hotels downtown that you can hotwire. If you're not picky on a certain chain and are just looking for your standard run-of-the-mill hotel, there are plenty of fair priced and nice hotels very close to all the 'stuff to do'.

Check out Old Montreal (seriously, check it out) and Club Super-Sex (and Super-Contact, if it's still open..had a great 'toy show' there once). My memories of the city are hazy (spent two summers worth of weekends there) but you could spend 7 days there and not leave feeling like you've done everything...it's an amazing city.

Hmm, my friend from Ottawa says I'll get bored by day 2 in Montreal, is this true? Kinda put a downer on things and opposite of what I've heard (like PiperInAlberta)

Depends on what you like. Very good food, some decent shopping, folks who speak French so simple stuff can be a cultural experience, the ladies are attractive, etc. It'll feel more European, and if you'd like just hanging out in a Euro city without a ton going on (say, Brussels or Cologne), then it's up your alley. If you're looking for a sprawling city (New York/London) or a ton of outdoor activities, then you could probably pick better.

No way. Montreal isn't New York but there are tons of things to do. Lots of neighbourhoods to explore, good food, interesting museums, great music scene, fun bars, etc.

P.S. If you get bored after two days in Montreal, you'll be bored after 45 minutes in Ottawa.

Reeeeaaaaaaaaallllllllyyyyyy?

I had a blast when I was there (albeit it was always Friday night -> Sunday evening and in the summer).

- GREAT food and places to eat. Lots of little pubs, restaurants and cafes with amazing food. Especially in Old Montreal. I found a couple great places with their own micro-breweries, those were awesome.

- GREAT night life. There are lots and lots of clubs and bars and people are generally friendly and outgoing. Now, the ONLY issue I had was because there are so many bars sometimes you'll wander into a bar that will be next to empty. It happens, but it's easy to bar-hop so if you don't like the one you're in, go next door. Also, there are titty bars everywhere (not sure if it's your cup of tea...but I like them). Did I mentioned that night life was GREAT? The cops are generally pretty easy-going downtown as well.

That about covers it for all that I care about. There's good shopping too and lots of shit to see, especially in the summer. Lots of festivals, buskers etc.

I'm not a fan of la belle province as a whole, but Montreal is definitely a big ol' slice of awesome within a province I otherwise dislike.

Now, to be fair Ottawa is a stuffy government town...but the bar scene is a blast. I never have a bad time when I go there. And there's lots of other stuff usually going on, perhaps just a little more low key then other places.

What you be going doing the Jazz festival (June 25-July 6)? If so, cheap will be hard to find

^^^Actually, hotel prices do not really go up drastically during the Jazz Festival, but they definitely fill up quickly.
