2 more weeks in Asia (Japan/Nippon/SqueakyChix/Kancho)

Hey braws, Missed you alls. Will be in Japan mar 24 - april 7. I plan on exploring on my own for the most part, since I am a misanthrope. But if any of you Japan dudes wanna meet up for a drink and/or some great food, let me know. All I ask is that you are somewhat sociable and do not try to rape me. I'm looking at you, rach. Be warned I am immature and an (generally unsuccessful) skirtchaser. If you aren't in Tokyo, I actually plan on exploring the country a little bit with the limited time I have. Haven't been in Nippon for two years and only rolled through Tokyo for a weekend then so I'm not exactly an expert. I only hope to not get anyone pregnant this time around. m@t can vouch that I am only somewhat awkward and that I enjoy drinking too much.

You going to make it down to Kansai? I'm up for some beers n such.

Im down for a few beers. That week is close to when I have a few papers due, but I can take a break. I can even take you on a death march like I did with Matt if you like. Its too bad you arent coming this weekend. Its a holiday here on Mon and my school is giving us all tues off as well so I could get really hammered for 4 days instead of just 2 or 3.

Uniqlo jeans, no-name Japanese hoodie, crappy tee-shirt, tailored navy h&m bomber-type jacket.

Would be great to meet up - you've been an awesome e-friend here on SF. By the way, what is the cheapest way to get around Japan? I assume that intercity transport is extremely pricey. I know there are shitty buses that run between cities from reading Murakami novels.

Are you in Tokyo? What part? I still haven't decided if I'm using SPG points and staying at the Westin in Ebisu, or hosteling, or couchsurfing. No worries about the drinking - I enjoy binging but then taking a few days off and being sober.

Metro...if you want to get around a lot you should really consider getting this http://www.japanrailpass.net/eng/en003.html They have a two week version for 45,000 yen. The buses do seem rather shitty.

I live just across the river from Tokyo (like 20min from Shibuya/Shinjuku) in Kawasaki. My school is right in the heart of Tokyo, like 15min walk from Roppongi so going anywhere around W. Tokyo is not a big deal or anything. I second the train pass, allows you to take the Shinkansen anywhere and the busses do suck a lot, having taken several across Japan.

$450...kinda pricey. Hmm...maybe I'll hitch rides. =D

Probably true, but can they be worse than 8 hour buses across Laos or India? Then again, with 2 weeks, I don't have the luxury of day long trips.

The train pass may seem expensive, but you can ride all JR trains without charge.
Well, night buses run from 4000yen. If you want to take a night train somewhere you can get a 3-day unlimited pass for JR while you are here (10,000 yen) that can be used any 3 different days. If you use that then you can buy a cheap ticket for access to that train. Its about the same price as the bus, but more comfortable.

If you are tall, the night buses are cramped and they dump you off in whatever city kinda early in the morning, so its kinda a pain to find a place to hang out before everything opens.

Other than all that, if you dont get the traveler's train pass, get the JR Suica x NE'X pass like I suggested to Matt. You get 1500yen credit on a train pass essentially for free with an express ticket from Narita to most major stations around town.

I will be bringing Chucks and Diesels. Also my Nike Frees for exercise. Maybe my C&Js, but I don't really feel like dressing up.

So to clarify, that 30day pass is $100 and you get three trips (unless you are taking multiple trips per day)? I guess that works if I go to three cities. Add the JR Suicea x NE'X and maybe that's four cities. The JR pass, IIRC, is that just the subway pass or something? Would the 1500yen credit cover a medium-distance train fare?

3-days unlimited JR rides is what the $100 one is. So say day 5 you decide to trip to Osaka, you could take express trains the whole way (this sucks and is slow, but cheap) and that is covered by the ticket, as well as any other JR trains you ride that day. So Say you need to go from Ebisu to Yokohama or Tokyo Station or something, that would also be free. The JR Pass covers all JR lines around Japan, so that includes bullet trains, and most all major stations in every city are JR or have a JR station nearby.
1500 Credit is enough for a day or two depending on how far you are going. Its good on ALL train lines (Metro, JR, Tobu, Tokyu, etc).
