Casual dress socks or athletic socks with Chucks?

I used to wear white athletic socks with sneakers. I quit wearing sneakers for several years outside of working out. I just recently bought a pair of low-top Chucks (taupe canvas, white with black stripe). I wore these yesterday for the first time with some dark denim and a pair of dark blue casual socks. Something wasn't working. Maybe I'm used to wearing athletic socks with athletic shoes.

Do you wear casual dress socks (not too thin) with your sneakers when worn with streetwear or do you stick with the even thicker socks that are sold as athletic socks?

For me, there are only two options: sockless or white cotton socks.

I have some very low (below the ankle) white, black and grey argyle socks from H&M that I wear with my Chucks and Chuck-like shoes. They're a little more stylish than athletic socks (and thinner, which I like), but they'll never look out of place with the shoes and I can wear them with a variety of pants types.
