Anyone here in Investment Banking?

Hey guys,

I'm looking to get into investment banking for Full Time. Im currently a junior right now, I didnt get any ibanking offers but am working in a finance related field. I was wondering if anyone related to investment banking had any advice, etc. I would have gone for the boutique summer route, unfortunately I am on study abroad at the moment and fear it may be too late....

Cheers!

Question 1: Do you go to a target?

Wouldn't consider it a top target but a semi target. A good number of my classmates got internships at BB and they do recruit on campus. I am currently aborad so I got screwed...

How did you get screwed? You could've contacted banks last semester and explained your situation. At my school, many have interviews in the Fall semester for people going abroad in Spring. Best thing you could do at this point is do a good job at whatever internship you have this summer "in a finance-related field," keep your grades up (I'm assuming you have 3.4+) and be able to spin your experience this summer into sounding relevant, both on your resume and in interviews....there's really no magic formula. There are still a lot of postings on my university's career website, though, for summer jobs. Why not keep looking?

Yea its partly my fault and I admit it. I didn't really get into Ibanking until winter break and it was too late to apply during the fall. I only saw GS's early decision but was not selected for first round. My GPA is a 3.7 so I think im OK there, it could be better but its just a foot in the door. I know that an Ibanking summer internship looks great on the resume for full time so I really regret not getting on this sooner. Thankfully my internship is finance related, dealing with valuation, so it is at least semi-relevant. I thought all banks were done with recruiting for the summer interns? GS, MS, and DB as well as CS show that they are...

Big banks are but opportunities at boutiques can still pop up. You also have to be proactive and seek them out yourself. That's how I got an internship after my sophomore year that eventually led to a full-time offer. (I actually emailed the head of a desk at a big bank and they just had someone leave and needed a spot filled for the summer, so my timing was very lucky.) Are you in a frat? Member of any clubs at your school? Networking with alumni with whom you have something in common is a good idea. For example, I was on the student newspaper and we had an alumni directory, so I found alumni in banking and contacted them. I got a few interviews out of that. I know it's easy for me to say, but you don't have much to worry about. A 3.7 at a "semi-target" (I'm assuming you mean a top 25 school that just isn't overly well-recruited, like Northwestern or Emory) with a finance-related internship should be able to pull at least a few full-time interviews in the Fall, and if that fails, you can set yourself up well for business school.

Yep top 20 school with a finance major. Strong alumni network. Im just getting into this whole deal, reading Wall Street Oasis and mergersandaquisitions everyday. I find this field just fascinating. I orginally had no idea what I wanted to do, only finance. But winter break really opened my eyes. Only had one interview at a BB, only applied to 3 BB and I didnt even know what a botique was at the time I was applying...heh man I was clueless. Unfortunately I have already accepted an offer, I guess its bad practice to reneg? Our school is pretty strict on that. I would otherwise start networking with boutiques, however even if I were to obtain an interview I would have to fly back which would cost 1500$ or so... Should I start on BB networking now? Im really behind on networking.

Read everything on this website:
www.mergersandinquisitions.com/

My good friend from college started the site after sucessfully getting a full-time with a BB in IBD w/ no previous i-banking experience.

He now makes a living consulting college kids on how to break into i-banking.

Also check out Wall Street Oasis.

Personally I did three years at Lehman, now a year at a small algo/agency brokerage shop, and next month will start at another BB in FX high-freq trading.

Hey mate,

Yep I already did and I read WSO on a daily basis. I just need to get my networking down... I recall reading a thread of yours awhile back, January I think it was about your aspirations and how it all changed when Lehman went under...
