I will sometimes forget to zip up when dressing in the morning (I'm a button fly fan now too), but never after . . .

I can recall doing that more than once although I rarely get past the front door in a state of undress!

Is there something about a button fly in the subconscious that prompts closer attention?

In my case, I don't put my shirt on until after I've put on my dress shoes to help minimize wrinkling. So I sometimes move around in trousers picking my tie and square with just the waistband done.

With my zip pants, they feel closer put together, and unless you catch a glimpse of metal, you sometimes can't even tell they are open when you are standing up. With the button flys, the pants just won't sight right. I think it has something to do with how zip pants are meant to meet, while button flys must be on top of each other to function.

When leaving the house or a restroom, I always do a check. It's a Texas-style movement, whereby I grab my belt buckle, swagger a little bit, and check the fly to make sure the zipper's at the top.

It happens rarely, but it happens. It usually happens when I get distracted, disrupted or just something interfering with my regular pattern of zipping up. Otherwise, muscle memory just takes over, and I don't even remember doing it.

Personally, I don't think I could trust someone who have never had his fly open in public. Either their claim is a lie, or if they are actually telling the truth, it'd be like someone without any wrinkles in their shirt - I'd just be weirded out. Everyone could use a little trouser Sprezzatura now and then

What's even more embarassing is when part of your shirt tail is also sticking out of your zipper.

I can't recall the last time I left my fly open. I do remember a number of occasions where I missed a back belt loop.

I do it on purpose

I'm kind of the opposite with button flies. Especially with my pair of Earnest Sewns, whose fly buttons are really difficult and frustrating to undo without undoing the actual waist button, I'll occasionally get lazy and leave the top one undone so I won't have to spend several minutes pulling at them when I'm trying to use a urinal. That may sound odd, but it's really awkward fiddling around with fly buttons when you're in the can and a line of 4-5 guys is behind you waiting and looking at you funny.

What - "just offering", sort of? That's what I tell the gf when she points out my open fly.

I had a friend in high school who, on purpose, was always leaving one button (middle one) undone on the fly of his Levis 501 jeans. He was convinced that girls were instinctively attracted to him because of this. he thought that they couldn't help but look at his fly and were therefore noticing this otherwise unnoticeable dude. He also thought that the fact that it was only one button looked like an accident and not the desperate search for attention (that it actually was)...
