Rental car companies & age minimums

I was really stunned to discover today that every major U.S. rental car company requires drivers to be 25 if they want to rent almost any car. I was trying to book a minivan so that I can move home next week but as I am under 25 I am SOL. Yes, I looked at U-Haul, but that shit is over $600 for a freaking panel van. Plus gas and tax. So now, because of this stupid age discrimination policy, one of my parents will have to take two days to come out here and drive me home. I am really livid.

How did you never know this? It is common knowledge. They do it to save on insurance costs.

I don't know how I missed out on this. My parents didn't think about it either. it makes sense intuitively but it's just so inconvenient.

One of your lady friends could surely rent one for you even if they look half their age.

Couldn't Dad just send the chauffeur with the limo?

1. Become Hertz #1 Gold member. (this may not be necessary but makes life so much easier) 2. Rent using CDP code from any of the hundreds of companies that have agreements with Hertz to allow people 21-24 to rent. 3. Go to Hertz location, see name on board, leave with car Are you a law student? ABA has a CDP code you can use.

The websites (Hertz, Thrifty, Dollar, Enterprise, etc) say age 21 with an extra fee.

Actually I know a recently retired congressman who lives near you, who would probably be willing to pick you up and give you a ride if you let him tickle you. Could also explain how things work in DC.

I was able to rent from almost every major rental car company while under 25. You just had to pay an extra 25-40/day insurance.

+1. They don't rent to anyone under 21. They rent to people under 25, you just have to pay extra.

Rented many times during undergrad for road trips. Just costs more.

yup.

I also had good luck with non-'corporate' locations. Some Car rental places are actually franchisees and those ones never charged me the extra fees. Usually at smaller airports where the next major airport was 100's of miles away. not sure where your at?

Yeah you can definitely rent a car younger than 25, just might have to pay extra. I did it myself last year. You might have to shop around not every place allows it. There's other truck/van rental companies as well.... Oh, and when I rented U-Haul trucks (a couple times when I was under 25) I didn't even need to pay extra, at least that I remember.

Have done this before. You can find CDP codes anywhere online. Just search. I rented from Hertz and National with never an under 25 fee. Plus usually the codes added in free LDW.

Seems to me your parents are the ones who should be pissed.
