(Minor) legal advice - Page 2

Something somewhat similar happened to me: When I lived in the 'burba, I used to park at a mall before heading to the subway for work. one day I get a call from my insurance saying someone had made a claim that I hit their car exiting another parking lot across town (at the same time when I would be on the train heading to work). Though I contested the claim (they recorded my statement and I told them to retrieve CCTV video from the mall I park at), my insurance still decided to pay the claim (it barely raised my rates, though) instead of further contesting it.

I suggest you discuss with your insurance company instead of handing out any money.

Call police, maybe insurance company. Tell guy to go fuck himself.

It would be awesome if the OP could keep this going with updates on how it works out (i.e. if it really was a scam or not). Especially as an FYI for other members who may/will run into a similar situation in the future.

If the guys is truly a PI he should be licensed by your state. You can check him out that way.

Also, my guess is that there's no video. Press the issue to have him show it to you.

EDIT: Not a lawyer...therefore not legal advice.

Clearly a scam. Follow advice given above.

Thanks, everybody, it didn't occur to me to get my insurance involved (they exist only to take my money and cut me a check when my two-week old truck gets blasted by 30 minutes of hail...). I'm going to call my agent this afternoon or tomorrow and get them in the loop.

While not as an alternative to contacting insurers/police, this is still a great idea!

Try this:

what the hell... screw that! the PI has ZERO jurisdiction over you (and in you, when you say it make sure you say "the person in question" and NOT "me" never admit that the person he is looking for is you!) he is a third party investigator, tell him if anybody has a problem with you to take it up with you directly and be prepared to show definite proof. Don't tell him your name, don't tell him anything else and tell him to have a nice day and close the door The above is NOT legal advice, but I do ask you to learn and know your common law rights and that third parties have zero jurisdiction over you (the person in question), they have nothing to do with you.

Don't call the police, don't call your insurance company and don't call him back. If he contacts you tell him you want to see the video. If he doesn't provide it.......tell him to pound sand. That is just my opinion. Not legal advice.
