The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Anybody watch this short-lived series or is a fan of it? I started renting the dvds and the show is outstanding. It is on a different timeline than the T3->Salvation Terminator direction but I like this one a lot better.
The show develops a very intricate and complex story of the relationship between John and his mother and as well as the course of impending future of Skynet and the crew's attempt at stopping it or at least containing it.

The first season was a bit simple in plot but nevertheless very entertaining. The second season was where the meat was at and really developed some complex story lines and new intertwining characters.

The mother is excellently played by Lena Heady, and Summer Glau is also excellent as the protecting Terminator.

A great series, I am so saddened that is was abruptly cancelled (not because of ratings but i am sure due to Fox and some politics). The show was hotly popular and has a large fanbase who want it to continue.

Your thoughts?

I watched it when it first came out, and I wasn't impressed. I thought the Sarah Connor character was the worst on the show, to be honest. The actress who played her just couldn't capture the character the way Linda Hamilton did. The other characters were OK, but I think Summer Glau was the only real bright spot. It's too bad it wasn't better. I think the concept was great, but for some reason it just didn't translate.

I don't think I made it through the first season, let alone into the second, so I can't speak to any improvement.

I was a fan of the series and enjoyed watching it. I think the writer's strike and the fact TIVO viewers were not counted in their audits lead the series to be cancelled.

i actually thought the same (initially) the first few episodes as well, but her portrayal of the character is alot more subtle than the movie sarah connor.

i think it works out better this way , a slow burning and slowly revealing of her many layers of the character (to shell out in later episodes and seasons) than the 1 iconic sarah connor you see basically only in T2. (the first one she is just still a waitress running away getting a grip on things, and she is absent in the last two movies).
thus, you need to have a gung-ho, all in your face, militaristic and all-revealing sarah connor since it is only your one and only showing.

the sarah connor in the series, is her making dinner for the family, going out picking up John, having a love relationship with someone, dealing with her son, doing other mundane things and she cant be always wielding a machine gun and a bandana while in the kitchen.

i dont think that same sarah would work in a series. it would quickly get tiring . just my take

Liked it alot. I don't get the massive criticism the show received from most people when it aired. The kid playing John was really irritating at first though, couldn't care less about Headey not following Linda Hamilton's portrait of Sarah, she was convincing on her own. I find it did a better job at developping all the skynet mythology and a sense of paranoia than the last two movies, it was also way more deep (for a tv show) on the artificial VS human intelligence reflection. That, along with some of the side stories that the show could've done without are probably what got it canned unfortunately.
Also, Summer Glau is perfection and Garreth Dillahunt is one scary mf.

+1 Linda hamilton's crazy badass portrayal works in a 2hrs movie with about 30min screen time but that's about it. You'd have a hard time developping a character around that performance on a series format.

absolutely.
the show was very deep. and they did a great job at (as much as they can with time travel fiction) piecing out the story when certain events happen or get sideturned into something else. the writers were very smart.

all the characters were memorable (except for say, Jesse. didnt like her), and i would say the T1001 played by Shirley Manson was perhaps one of the best tv antiheroes/villains? of all time.
Garret was great too. he played his awkwardness just perfectly.

This is a good point, and it's probably something I missed by giving up on the series early on. Maybe I'll give it another chance if my Netflix queue starts to get thin. I really did want to like it, given I loved the movies, but I just couldn't get into it. If it got better as it went on, it might be worth trying again.

I forgot about that character. She was awesome.

I really liked it, too. It did a good job of balancing action with the various characters' personal baggage, unlike Caprica, for example, where it's baggage until the last 5 minutes and then they advance the arc plot by like 2 inches.
