Yeah, I wonder what happened- the great vodka revolution of the 90's pushed it off the low cost shelf?

Nikolai is far and away the most popular vodka on college campuses. It's like $10 for a handle. Every 18 year old college girl buys it so that she can have vodka and fruit juice or whatever other hideous concoction strikes her fancy.

"Hideous concoction"? Screwdrivers ain't exactly new, and apple juice with vodka has been a diet staple in Eastern Europe for hundreds of years. If you can get hold of bison grass vodka, one portion vodka to two portions apple juice is the traditional polish drink.

I've never even seen this Nikolai stuff. We have Popov, McCormick's, and Bartons vodkas.

I was about to mention this. It's profoundly depressing/sickening to go into a bar by a res town and see (usually) white bartenders serving Sioux, Mandan, & Blackfeet who are so shitfaced they can barely stand. I'm in no way relieving the injuns of personal responsibility, but it's sickening nonetheless.

I'm not sure MT is your kind of state.....

We fished some of the lakes on the Blackfeet reservation a few years ago. Arranged to meet our guide and pick up our tribal permits in Browning - it was a vaguely threatening/sinister place @ 10 a.m. - I cannot imagine it at night.....

My experience with the Flathead reservation is that it is a wonderful place, only made depressing by the over-reliance of kids on alcohol and a concurrent general lack of ambition in the kids. The flip side is a sense of family so strong that few wish to move away, and those that do usually come back.

As a Native Montanan, I can tell you that Browning is perhaps the most feared town in the State. According to local legend, he Blackfeet were the last tribe in the NW subdued, and were considered an extremely militant tribe.

Our guide knew everyone and put us at ease, but I could see how you could easily/quickly wind up in big trouble. Buckskin (great name) had some kind of gigantic holstered pistol that was velcroed down to the center console in his truck. He said it was for scaring the bears that can appear out of nowhere up on the lakes, but I noticed him casually peel back restraining strap(?) as one of the drunks reeled over towards us slurring some kind of threat/ question...

* Another time a fellow told us to steer clear of Ovando.....

The craziest basketball game I ever played in my life was on the Fort Peck Res. Pretty interesting shooting free throws while "fans: are trying to hit you with pennies. And the half the opposing team got baked at halftime.

I used to hunt on a ranch near Fort Peck. I witnessed first hand what you had to say above about drinking.
