Gas fireplaces

Am I the only person who hates these things? My wife is watching these HGTV shows and 95% of the fireplaces are gas.

Real fireplaces , fake ones

My dad replaced the real fireplace in our home with a gas one a few years back. I was displeased. And last year he removed the gas stove from our Adirondack camp (granted, the camp is new and "modern" so it was unnecessary, but I still liked it ).

Real is certainly preferable to gas - in principle.

But we have to realize that there was a time when one could actually get good, correctly-seasoned firewood and proper kindling, and that's MUCH less available now (and I, at least, have no interest in chopping my own.) The gas assist makes starting a fire actually *possible* for folks who use crappy "lolfirewood" from Publix.

Real ones are great but gas ones are cheaper, faster and more convenient to use/clean. In places were winters are shorter and milder gas would make more sense.

Each have their place. Though if you have just one fireplace, and it is on the main floor, IMO there's no reason not to go with a real wood fireplace.

Setting up a nice traditional fire is a great feeling. I did it as a kid all the time, and had my first chance as an adult a few years ago. The skills never left me.
