A Day in Vancouver

I'll probably be spending a day in Vancouver in the near future, looking for some ideas for places to see/eat/shop downtown. Not from the area and would like to make the most of my time.

Also, if anyone knows a good place to park my car downtown or where I can pick up some Clarks desert boots in the downtown area, I'd be most appreciative.

Yaletown and Granville Island for sure to see/eat. Stanley Park to see. Shopping on Robson and Gastown.

Chinese food is good. Richmond is better than Vancouver but they still have a nice chinatown.

There is Japadog which is a hot dog cart serving japanese style hot dogs..really good. I liked Shabusen for cheapish all you can eat sushi and korean BBQ.

Granville Island is great. Go to Grouse Mountain if its a nice day. Capilano suspension bridge is cool too. Both aren't too far from the city.

Thanks all.

Is there a central location I can park my (rental) car to see most of this stuff without having to drive around any more then is necessary?

For downtown/yaletown/gastown I would park at Pacfic Center underground parking lot. You're gonna have to drive to Granville Island. You could also take the Canada Line Skytrain for Richmond, but it's highly recommended to drive to get around Richmond.

its kinda hard to find free parking in downtown but i believe you can park at pacific center, if you can find a spot there.
i suggest skytraining and using the canada line though. its pretty efficient and thats how most people travel around in downtown.

+1 on the skytrain. parking downtown is pretty expensive.

if you're only there for a day i would pretty much stick to downtown. robson st./yaletown/gastown should keep you pretty busy. if it's a nice day out, stanley park/sea wall is not to be missed.

Forget trying to find parking downtown and just park in a free lot near another SkyTrain station, maybe even Metrotown depending on where you're staying. As for Richmond, I haven't been on the Canada Line, but since it's mostly large blocks of flat suburbia, I'd suggest driving. +1 on Shabusen and other suggestions already outlined above. If you want to shop downtown, you'd probably be interested in Robson St. and Pacific Centre.

Pro Tip: Full day parking at Pacific Center on Saturdays and Sundays are only $6.

That's an understatement. Conde Nast stated that Vancouver has the BEST chinese food in the world.

Go ti Imperial Seafood for dim sum lunch. Ask for something special and garlic-y.

Shabusen is good as is Japadog. I'd say definitely get a Japadog.

Much better than the usual American fares but this rating is not even close. If you're heading to Richmond, most places along Alexandra Road are excellent. Wo Fung Desserts in the Aberdeen food court is excellent - best deep fried chicken wings ever.

I would personally stick to downtown for the day, as Richmond is not really a "tourist trap" especially during the daytime. There are some very cool places for food in Yaletown/Gastown... r.tl (regional tasting lounge) stands out as a recent one.

If just one day, just stay in downtown. Best shopping areas include Robson, Alberni/Burrard, Pacific Center, the whole Gastown area, Main street between King Edward to Broadway and West Broadway between Burrard and McDonald. Be sure to check out roden grey, lark, eugene choo, gravity pope, leone. Spend the rest of the afternoon (if sunny) wandering Coal Harbour and Stanley Park. Head to Yaletown for drinks in the evening.

I personally love Salade de Fruits & Le Faux Bourgeois for cheap french food. Or head up the Cannery if you're coming before the end of March, as they are closing soon and they have been pretty good. Kirin in Richmond is amongst the best for Chinese food - skip the one in downtown, it's terrible. If you have more money and time I'd go to Fraiche - great location, food and service, and West Vancouver is one of the prettiest (and wealthiest) municipalities in Canada imo.

Parking: Pacific Center if it's a weekend. There are a couple of places in downtown where there is near-ample free parking, but you can't stay longer than 2 hours there (and it's strictly enforced). If it's a weekday it's probably a better idea to park near a Canada Line terminal and just ride the train down - $2.75 a pop (however this would make getting to Stanley Park quite difficult).
