AE MacNeil LWB vs. JCrew Alden LWB

I was thinking McClain, not MacNeil.

McClains's not really a long wing - it has more broguing than the Alden. That said, it's sneakily the best shoe that AE has, and if you find it for a good price, you should grab it. I got in suede for $200 or so IIRC and I've gotten great use from it.

Also the McClain last is nicer - round but elongated, as opposed to the blobby Barrie.

AE's go on sale.


So does the Darlton a little less often......

Why is the MacNeil not a long wing?

Why do you say this. Is it a general Alden > AE feeling (which is fine) or is it the styling of this particular shoe. I have not seen Alden in a pebble grain like this.

the styling of this shoe - the wing is too low on the vamp.

And that medallion looks like it was accidentally placed too close to the sole in the front of the toe..

if the 2 shoes without regard to price then Alden is better, but if you are on a budget, the AEs on discount are fine and will last just as long. And yes the AE's "wing" is pushed relatively far forward on the shoe.

MacNeil in shell is very nice. The stitching is more robust on the AE's than the Alden's, more stitches per inch and doubled.

That said I don't think you could go wrong with either pair, but if you can wait hunt for the real deal Kenmoors.

^ I've been searching ebay for some old Florsheims for awhile. Most of the time I search for "Florsheim Imperial" and then by size. The only problem is I'm not sure what size I should be searching for! I wear a sz. 9 Barrie and the only pair of AEs I have are the Fairfax also in a US9. What size Florsheim should I be looking for? In regard to the the wing being low on the vamp on these AEs, it looks kind of low on Leathersoul's "American Longwing" as well but it may just be the pics. For me, the perfect LW is the old Florsheim Imperial in chestnut grain. Short of that, I'd settle for the MacNeil in walnut grain.
