For all you donkeys debating what type of stock to print your resume on, here's a spot-on article about the mentality recruiters have when they look at resume. Maybe someone will pull this up on a search and find it a bit helpful.

One-sentence summation of that article: Resume readers are overworked and usually pissed off, so make your resume easy to read and free of cutesy bullshit. (Which is good advice, but doesn't necessarily require 7 bullet points. )

I strongly dislike the tone of this article. It makes it seem like every person who reads a resume is some psychotic, ADD nutjob who can't think of anything worse than doing their job. The one good point made is to avoid resume fads.

If you've done any hiring, then I'll grant you that you may have a different perspective. However, if you haven't, take it from me (who has done a lot of hiring, recently for internal roles, and formerly as a head hunter), this is exactly how I feel about the task, and I know everyone else I know in the role feels the same way.

I have gone through the hiring process and I am currently going through it again, I didn't find going through resumes to be the bane of my existence. It could be because such efforts are a nice break from the quant/stats heavy work I do on a daily basis. If you dislike it so much why would you ever be head-hunter <interrobang>

I disagree with the outlook, but not all of the points. My outlook is not why I should toss a resume, which is their point #3, but why I should call that person in to see about paying them to do a job. It's really a different slant I think.

Agree about being brief, no bullshit language, don't tell me you increased XYZ by A% without telling me how you did it and why it's important. Don't tell me you're are a "team builder" or "excel at multi-tasking." Might as well tell me you know how to wipe your ass without assistance.

Also, for god's sake, have a professional email address. Two that pop to mind, from resumes I have read through the years, are modelofthenudes@**** and hamstapowah@****

This is a slightly improved way of looking at it.

Oh, was just chatting with one of my department heads. Coincidentally, he was chuckling over an email on a resume. HungDemon666@... WTF are people thinking?

In my old firm for a laugh we would search the database for email address containing "sexy" and "420."

It's a good address if you're applying for a job as a gigolo.

Anyone ever get any interesting offbeat resumes? This is something I did for a class exercise and I actually want to do a version of it to try passing around. It's basically a "failure resume" where you talk about failures you've made in life and how you've learned from them. Examples: Chairman of School Bake Sale Responsible for failing to achieve targeted revenue of $XXXX due to poor organization of team and lack of advance planning. Overestimated help I would get from other committee members and failed to respond timely to make up for lack of publicity. Previously had only been responsible for chocolate chip cookie baking, and undertook financial and marketing tasks without any prior experience or any mentoring. Lessons learned include planning in more detail with specific responsibilities assigned and checking on progress in a more timely manner. or Relationship with Serious Girlfriend 2004-2006 Girlfriend decided to end relationship because I decided to go to football game with friends on her birthday. Failed to understand the importance she placed on birthdays in general and on this particular birthday, as she was hoping her 18th would be treated as very significant. The present delivered three days later did not help an already damaged situation. My poor "calendar management" skills set up a difficult circumstance and my persuasive (romantic) skills were insufficient to turn things around. I learned to be more attentive, sensitive and to give priority to girlfriends and birthdays.

I don't see this ever working, though I'm sure it will be memorable.
