best spam ever! It looks like it would be a lot of fun, but the events themselves seem too bro-ridden. Most I have heard about it until reading the site just now has been from overhearing walking stereotypes of finance bros on the train talking about it. The madison one is going to be a bunch of people in from the cities trying to show how "rugged and manly" they are before they go back to their spotless condos and put on a dress shirt fresh from the cleaners and head to the office to write some mortgages. They will then see me out the window and wonder wtf kind of crazy person would be out riding a bike in the middle of a snow storm..

I've signed up for one with a bunch of buddies this coming November. I figure Under Armour Coldgear compression stuff and some type of quck drying skully. Was there any consensus on which running shoes are best? Road Runner puts me in a stability plus shoe but there aren't many trail shoes to pick from. Moreover, they all look like they will weigh a ton when wet. Any advice is greatly appreciated....

It is questions like this that make me believe my previous assessment of 75% of the participants is correct. My suggestion would be to wear weather appropriate clothes and some cross training type shoes. Nothing waterproof (since this will just hold water in) and nothing with too much bulk/padding (which will also hold water and get heavy). Oh, and wool socks. Definitely wool socks.

From the videos on youtube, it seems to have the cult-like behavior that crossfit does. You also don't need to be in great shape to complete it, assuming the video I saw was the same course that everyone does. Lots of people that were seemingly overweight.

I agree that these sorts of races have dumb asses in them and even tons of cross fitters who go. But thats why its fun to go out and win the thing and make them all realize cross fit cult isn't gods fitness plan. And you don't have to be in good shape to complete much of any race. But I see what you mean, I've been very disappointed with races that say expect grueling courses but the course is just blah. You don't make money if you can't expect the regular public to complete it.

If you want an actually grueling course with mud and obstacles that leaves you completely beat at the end of the event...go race cyclocross.

Yes, sometimes there is even fire:
