I was going to ask why he hadn't gotten his mandible reconstructed, but reading the Esquire article - he had a fair bit of radiotherapy and even a carotid blowout.

I just googled and it says oral sex/HPV is responsible for a rise in throat cancer. Lucky for me, I'm married; we don't have oral sex. Damn, now I just got a mental image of Ebert eating out his wife. >_<

I'm not aware of a test for men. The problem is that HPV usually doesn't manifest itself in men, except as cancer. Genital warts are a comparatively rare strand (actually, I think two strands cause it) of HPV and most HPV carriers will never get them.

I first learned about it when I was lobbying. Florida was considering mandating an HPV vaccine for all girls and there was a forty-year old man lobbying that men needed it as well. He had come down with throat cancer despite never smoking. Doctors eventually traced it back to HPV. His wife had the same strand manifest itself on her cervix.

It gets worse, you can get it from kissing, too: (Reuters Health) - Oral sex and open-mouthed "French" kissing increase the risk of acquiring oral infections of human papillomavirus, or HPV, a study shows. "Performing oral sex is not without risks," Dr. Maura L. Gillison told Reuters Health.
