NFL to consider changes to OT

A field goal in OT would not end the game...

Unfortunate that the article cites the Vikes/Saints game, but worthy of discussion.

Your thoughts?

Are there any stats out there that show the winning percentage of those who got the ball first in OT?

I have had this discussion on many occassions with my father who is of the belief that each side should get equal opportunity to score in OT, no sudden death. Basically, each side starts off on their own 20 yard line, field goals don't count. You need a touchdown, and if the other team doesn't score on their turn then you win. This eliminates the problems with the coin toss and field goals.

i read somewhere that since 94 (the year the nfl moved the kickoff back 5 yards), the win percentage of the team that wins the coin toss is around 60-65% and the percentage that the game is decided by a field goal is 75%-80%. i'm trying to find the data, but i remember finding it a year or so ago when my friends and i had this same discussion. i love the idea of college football rules for the pros, but maybe starting from the 40 or since a 30 yd FG for a pro should be easy.

its easy just give the team with the home field advantage (that it rightfully earned in the playoffs) the ball first. have the away team kick off and no coin toss.

it gives the home team an advantage and increases home field advantage. crappy teams will still lose to the better teams, but even if it goes to OT in the regular season then the home team earns the right to get the ball.

I'm glad they're finally looking at some changes for OT, but I'm not thrilled with what they've proposed. It's an improvement, but it's still not great.

1) College-style OT is a fucking joke. The simple solution is no FGs in OT, only TDs and safeties count. 2) It doesn't even matter anyways since next year is the last year of NFL football.

Yeah, but think of how awesome the UFL will be!

Why not just play another quarter?

I prefer this over the current practice in the NFL.

This is the "first to six" rule that I have previously endorsed. The only negative I see is the potential for more ties.

It seems to me that the proposed changes are unnecessarily complicated without actually solving anything.

how so? both teams get a shot for 4 quarters before it. why limit it after that? who gives a shit if one of them kicks an FG? if the other one can't match it....game.
