Saveur- LA issue.

Has anyone read this yet? I'm headed to LA in couple of months and would like to know if the cheap/street food choices in this issue are reliable. The Texas issue they did last year was good by my tastes so I tend to think it's probably accurate.

I glanced through quickly. Saw no Pinks references....

they did a pretty good job. the thing about la street food is that there is SO much of it that putting together any kind of comprehensive list is impossible. the places that they cited all seem to me to be good choices, though some of them perhaps not the best choices ... or at least not my best choices. but if you ate only from their list, you would not have a bad meal.

The pizza looked good on the cover. I only saw it quickly at the market yesterday.

Forgive me, but is this good or bad? I've driven by it before, but never indulged.

I have no idea - have never been to LA (except LAAX)

Pink's is terrible.

Street foods, especially, mobile trucks with strange fusion or retro, kitchy hipster grub is all the rage now. Personally I think its very overrated and too campy for its own good.
I'll buy the issue at lunchtime today if I pass by a newsrack.

You should try the Kogi BBQ trucks --- they live up to the hype.

LA Weekly also has their list of LA eats up, and it's more dish-centric than restaurant-specific:

Yeah, been to Kogi a few times, it was really good. Also liked the Indian Food truck, that was nice at some party I went to....its getting too saturated, had some "Flying Pig" tacos last week, they had some pork belly sliders, duck tacos, things like that....not very good and quite expensive (3 bucks/taco). I have that LA Times issue on my desk, I've done 11 of the 99 so far.

In and Out Burger

Tomato Pie Pizza - Really good for LA

Gilbert's El Indio, Santa Monica - Great Mexican

Pinks is waaaaaaay overrated and the line is always 1/2hr long

Just down the street from Pinks is Umami Burger --- a different, but very tasty alternative to a traditional burger.

i have a sentimental attachment to pinks. i used to take my daughter there after her music lessons. but i guarantee we NEVER waited more than 5 minutes. and, sadly, the food is crap.

I decided to check out a "Grilled Cheese Food Truck" today, there were at least 20 people in line waiting for food. The premise of these is for quick and easy meals, as well as being mobile. I just don't get the hype of waiting 45 minutes to get some quickly prepared food, I could get a sit-down meal for that (albeit more expensive). one of my favorites around town is El Gran Burrito on Santa Monica and Vermont.....

After waiting for an hour in line at midnight in 46 F temperatures with not much more protection than a sweater for a Kogi shortrib burrito, my theory is that it tasted so good because I was cold, hungry, and basically in a state of deprivation. I would do it again, too.

Grilled cheese food truck does sound stupid, though.
