Threads like this terrify me. I'm a first-year business student at a non-descript school in Southern Ontario. (ie. nowhere near top anything) Whenever I see threads talking about having to go to a top 10 school, or a top 4 firm, or w/e else, it scares the shit out of me. Like I said, I'm in first year, and as of yet I don't have much idea what I want to do. But I do know I'm not at a top "target" school or w/e, and all that stuff. So am I fucked? Make me feel better. Oh yeah, one more thing; I've only finished 1 semester but my GPA is 11.8/13, almost an A, and I plan to keep it as such (or higher).
Hmmmm a nondescript Southern Ontario University that grades on a on a 13 point scale... are you at MAC? If you want to be a consultant, take the Eng Management degree (5-year program) and do a professional experience year. If you're into commerce, and at all good at math, get into electrical, computer of software engineering. Don't worry too much about all that 'love of engineering' stuff, if you don't believe in it, but hanging with the engineers might teach you somethign about integrity, while the commerce / mgmt courses actualy help to reduce the intensity of your workload.
Get involved in student government, and learn as much as you can from your professors, the alumni office and student groups. Stay away from the campus political (national) parties though, they take a lot of your time, and end up having very little beneficial effect on your career growth or earning potential.
It's been about 15 years since I left, but as I recall the Eng management types who worked a year and demonstrated leadership potential, always got good jobs in consulting.
Good Luck!
