The Rubiyat of Omar Khayyam One of my favorite books of poetry. (particularly the Edward J. Fitzgerald translation into English). This should be available freely online somewhere.

Listening to her ramble on turned me off poetry for a couple more years. . .

Start with a poet from your own country and language.

For Americans, I think that Whitman and Dickinson are good starts.
