Why are people numbing the taste of good Scotch with ice, anyway? And why are The Macallan promoting it?

It is cool, but very much a gimmic.

Actually, a small bit of water helps to open the hidden notes in the Scotch and smoothes the alcohol. The reason that a spherical cube is preferred is that the ice tends to melt at a slower rate and doesn't water down the scotch. If you prefer your scotch neat, you are still supposed to add a drop or two of water (preferably distilled).

Macallan isn't exactly a purists company and a good number of people who drink it pour $500 bottles of 25yo over ice. This is a cool product that draws attention to the brand, caveat emptor.

What, you've never heard of people putting ice or water with their Scotch?

That's clearly not what he said.

Numbing in the sense of cooling down.

I know, I know - it's just that there's a lot of people out there who like Scotch on the rocks, and the use of a solid ball of ice is a refinement that can heighten the experience, both in taste and aesthetics, for those who choose to drink their Scotch this way. It is, how you say, "fun".

A large cube also works well, and one can purchase silicone trays to make spheres and cubes.

Frozen water balloons also work

It doesn't always numb the taste. 1 or 2 small ice cubes, or presumably this ice ball, can help mellow out a cask strength or help to open up the palate of some drams. Loading it up with ice like a typical bar or restaurant will do for a drink "on the rocks" will numb the palate, adding a small amount won't.

I fucking hate iceballs. Fucking stupid ass gimmick has been around for years.

You ever take a sip of your drink and have a pretentious dumbass ball roll down your glass and hit you in the nose?

Use a normal ice cube you wanks.
