This is not necessarily true. Frequently there are departmental rules that mandate that all papers be handed in by a certain date. It's an absolutely bone-headed move to hand a paper in 2 years late.

I had a prof who took six months after the term ended to grade a final paper, which left me with an F for a while, but never ran into something like this.

I've never understood profs who do this. I had one that pulled this, and it really pissed me off. For some students this behavior on the part of profs can affect financial aid, scholarship eligibility, and even job prospects.

WTF is wrong with that prof? Talk to the dean, tell him the whole truth, if the AD his discplined the prof for this before it shouldn't be a surprise to him.

No need to lie, just don't take on the tone that you're blaming the prof for all your problems, or you instantly sound unsympathetic.

I'm a senior graduating in May. Two years ago I took a class where the professor told us our final paper was due "when it was done" and when pressed for a more precise deadline, he said: "I still get papers from two years ago."

Well, I took that somewhat literally. I wrote 90% of the paper two years ago but never ended up finishing it. Until now.

I emailed my prof with the paper and reminded him of what he had told us two years ago, and he said he'd be happy to grade it and change my grade (from F to whatever), only he was recently chided by an Associate Dean for doing the same thing I asked him. So he said I have to ask the Associate Dean, and if the AD okays it, then he'll grade my paper. He added: "You should have some good story to tell him why you were late. Good luck!"

So, what story do I tell him? Do I throw the prof completely under the bus and say "Hey, he made it sound like it shouldn't be a problem. Why should I suffer?"? Do I go with the sympathy angle, that I'm a second-semester senior currently taking an additional courseload (6 classes instead of 4 or 5), and that if I get a grade in the course, I can drop one I have this semester? Or do I just outright lie and make up a reason why I could submit it that semester or in the six months following (where changing the grade is less onerous a process)?

You willingly carried an F on your transcripts for two years?

Yeah. Didn't hurt me as I got a good internship (back when the grade was an I) that turned into a good full-time job.

And left a 90% completed paper just sitting around unfinished for two years?

I never understood academics who teach students 'skills' that will screw them over later in life. I think the AD should fire your professor for being an idiot and force you to keep that 'F' for going along with such a boneheaded policy. Not trying to be a prick, but jesus....you left an uncompleted paper sitting around for two years and (despite your old prof's policy) expect to hand it in two years late and pass a class you failed two years ago? Because if you honestly believed your prof when he said that was a good idea, I know some Nigerian princes looking to share their fortune...

Your opinion isn't helpful to me at all and you *are* being a prick. And yes, I expect to receive a grade.

Did your prof tell you to lie? Even if he did, I wouldn't. There isn't a point lying here, really. Just tell him your prof's policy.

The prof led us to believe that it'd be acceptable (I know a kid who handed it in 6 months later), and it was more than a passing remark. If this is the professor's policy, albeit somewhat absurd, why should I doubt it? He's a tenured prof who has been here for almost 30 years. I really didn't think it'd be an issue. And that you think/expect that university teaches you *any* skills makes you a bonehead.
