dining clubs

I have always found the idea of a group of friends getting together to cook and eat periodically to be cool. I remember reading that it is very common in northern spain, for instance.

I was talking to an aquantance who does it with a group of her friends, and I thought about getting a group of my friends together in a loose framework to cook and eat.

anybody do this? anybody have any guidelines about how they do it? I mean, is it rotated so that everyone does it once every few months, but the rest of the time is a guest? is the work shared every time? does everyone chip in money? any inpot would be valued.

I do now, more or less. but I have 6 or 8 friends who are in the food and wine business, and I am thinking that getting the group together on a regular basis would be interesting

I invited someone over to cook with me once, but he bailed at the last minute. It scarred me, and I have not asked anyone again.

I am actually thinking of a local cooking school, maybe renting the space one night a month, to keep it from being in any one person's house. also, we all have small kids. anyway, thinking about the idea.

A friend of mine recently contacted me for ideas because she started doing this type of thing... group of friends and they rotate the home/apartment it's held at and who does the cooking/cocktails. About a group of 6-10 people and they rotate every 6 weeks... no work is shared unless requested, same with wine/drinks. Hers is a sit down dinner, but casual, so it's not like she's blowing through $600 in food and drink to serve people. She said people usually bring the host a bottle of wine or liquor as "payment," which the host either serves or saves.

I've often thought of something like this or something involving a wine tasting. We put together a group for tasting, about three years ago. Five couples. Didn't even make it through the first rotation. The problem was schedules and not everyone had the same level of interest/expectation. One couple thought $50 for four different bottles was egregiously high (didn't come out until after we started).

I imagine the same two problems might happen with a dining club.

that might be the case. really hard to tell with people. one couple hits the French Laundry twice a year - that is, flies from chicago to go to TFL twice a year. they seem to be food people. on the other hand, I was in paris at the same time another guy was there so we had dinner together, and he wasn't terribly comfortable around a meal that I considered pretty standard. so hard to say. but it could be fun.

Wait, isnt this like having a group of friends that you regularly do dinner parties & such with?

We have people over 1-2 times a week and go to others accordingly. It's not always fancy, but we share good food and good wine and etc...

Seattle has something like this, which have been dubbed underground restaurants. Someone hosts, friends come out, and professional chefs are invited to come cook whatever the hell they want for the evening (they're paid for this of course). No food/restaurant regulations to deal with either, and it's always a lot fun for everyone.

My closest friends and I get together the Third Thursday of every month for dinner, drinks and maybe a game of two of cards. We rotate locations and the host cooks. Great fun. The set schedule is the way to go.

So...yup....Zach....you are officially Old I have some friends who used to do this (until a couple of divorces interceded and kinda broke their circle up). They invited me a couple of times, but I never went. IIRC they used to rotate it monthly (first Thursday I think) and noting a bit of variation in their financial situations, they used to ask people to toss in 10 or 15 bucks a head or something toward the food and wine.
