Most knowledgeable observers consider the well dressed Italian man to be the most clothes conscious in the world. And more than 70% of the neckties sold in Italy are blue.

Coincidence? I don't think so. Blue is the most flexible necktie color. In shades from darkest navy to very pale it complements most dress shirts and gray, brown or blue jackets.

This week I am featuring two lighter blue neckties for the season. One is a navy, royal and white jacquard by Michael Drake. Summer's tartan neckties evoking Madras checks are the featured products this week at A Suitable Wardrobe's Online Haberdashery. Madras, once known as bleeding madras for its tendency to run during laundering, is an airy patterned cotton from India that has seen a bit of a resurgence recently, in an unfortunately colorfast form, after disappearing from American markets for a couple of decades.

But then these silk neckties are not intended to bleed either. And though they look like they might be a bit loud, when paired with shirts that have a white or cream ground the pattern blends into the ensemble. It's a great combination with cotton or linen jackets. Wear a simple white linen pocket square for a contrast in texture.

This week the ASW Online Haberdashery is featuring summer's best caps, made by the capmaker to British royalty in a generously sized model based on photos of the Prince of Wales in the 1930's. These are constructed of 14 ounce/420 gram Irish linen with a pure cotton lining and offered in either dark navy blue or cream. They are particularly nice combined with a summer scarf.

Supersized Cappellis!

There are five new Capelli neckties on the site this week, in a lined three fold construction and a choice of two sizes to accommodate most men's preferences. And good as Cappellis are (certainly one of the two best makes in Naples if not all of Italy) I don't think it's completely accurate to say that the new 3 1/2"(8.5 cm) wide by 60"(152 cm) long size is a supersized version of my standard 3 1/4"(8 cm) by 56"(142 cm) size. I simply needed a headline.

The new Cappellis are priced better than their six-fold relations but at $150 each even I will not claim they belong on a value menu. Still, that is the best price I know of for Capelli neckties in the English-speaking world.

And by the way, in addition to the featured items the determined browser will find some new Drake's neckties as well as the first of a series of cotton and silk neckerchiefs.

It was 18 months ago that I first wrote about the Sloop, nicely shaped leather soled loafers with the look of a boat shoe, after The Sartorialist photographed Luca Rubinacci wearing a pair. The maker, a Milanese venture called SW1, closed its retail doors during the recession and the design has been virtually unavailable since then. That was too unfortunate a situation to be allowed to continue, so this week A Suitable Wardrobe will be re-introducing the Sloop in two colorways at the online haberdashery.

Lightweight, the Sloop is relaxed, with laces that tie and untie. They are as easy to wear with shorts or chinos as they are comfortable under a blazer or cotton suit. And they look just as at home scuffed up in Mahattan Beach as they do freshly polished in the Hamptons.

The Sloop will initially be available in dark brown calf suede or polished dark brown calf for $475 a pair including shipping. Mid-brown water buffalo (shown in the photo) will follow later this summer because, frankly, some guys are going to decide that one color is just not enough.
