There are several permutations to this, and I guarantee you it will shut somebody up if they've been talking like a jackass about how great they are at chess.
I remember actually nailing a guy with this when I was a kid in chess club. Everyone was flabbergasted.

I played chess for about 6 or 7 years consistently from 7 to age 14 or so.

I was pretty competitive to the point where I went to regular chess lessons each week, traveled with a local high school team to tournaments, and had an official "chess ranking" blah blah blah

I got burned out though after age 14 because it just wasn't fun anymore.

From my experience the best way to improve is to always play a better opponent, and to play often.

It really helps if you can sit down with your opponent after the game and go over his/her thought process during the game (provided you took "notation" during the game(s)).

I used to play chess against people who were lower-tournament level (even one guy who had played Bobby Fischer when Bobby was like twelve... said guy got whooped, needless to say.) It's just got too humiliating getting my ass handed to me over and over again.

Plus, it doesn't help that endgames bore me to tears. The whole deal about pushing pawns forward at the end just takes much too long.

I will say that my brother, who frequently plays chess on-line, was insistent on playing chess with me during our last vacation, and I roundly kicked his ass.

Endgames are by far the most interesting part of the game. Each move can be critically important, win or lose.

I am also terrible. I've been noodling around on Chessmaster for DS, which has some training modes, but they don't work well for me. I usually get impatient, sending in my pawns to do reckless damage, until the computer sets up decent attacks that I didn't have the foresight to defend against.
