I think this really, really sucks for your friend, and I feel bad for him. That said, he's an adult, and the possibility of having a child, even if it's a result of failed birth control, should have been something he considered. I think it's despicable that he's willing to walk out on his own child. This girl did something very wrong, but that doesn't make it OK for him to respond in kind. That (future) child doesn't deserve being raised without a father.

I've done this for some clients, but the relinquishment needs to be voluntary by both parents. This means she'd have to consent to him walking away as well.

Alternatively he could go to prison for the next 18 years. Courts will sometimes involuntarily terminate parental rights if the person is in prison for such an extended term.

Also, make sure he demands a paternity test. They aren't married so there's no presumption of paternity. It might cost him a thousand bucks or so but if there's even a chance it might not be his now is the time to find out. If she pops out the kid, he starts paying, and then ten years from now finds out it's not his he could still be on the hook. Find out now.

Not my area of expertise, but it seems very unlikely based on what I know of domestic law in my state that a court would terminate parental rights unless the man is a complete bum or the woman has lined up someone else to take his place (i.e., adoption). How do you argue it's in junior's best interest to be without a father or 17% of his income?

I'm only dimly aware of who Tom Leykis is, but seriously, this is revolting. Yeah, I know it's intended to be outrageous and provocative, but this sort of "ha-ha-only-serious" flippancy is typical of true moral cowards who can't bear to consider the real consequences of their beliefs.

a guy my brother knows actually did this. he had made his girlfriend take her pill in front of him every morning, and she switched the pills for something (the story I heard was some kind of pill used to clean contact lenses) and then she got pregnant. he didnt ever take her home from the clinic, after he checked her in, he called her dad.

she was a bitch, but he was, too. world's full of A-holes

not the best plan she coudl back out at eh last minute, i would wait until the bill had to be paid and run for the cab i had waiting,

Sounds like a real man, how far we've fallen. Get a paternity test at the very least. If I were him, I'd pray this chick has good genes and put the child support payments towards cooking school

Had to edit this three times because I couldn't find the words to describe how disgusting this is. Yes it sucks that he got fooled, but that isn't the kids fault. If anything, I despise your friend even more than the girl who fooled him. As LA Guy said:

Id do this if it happened to me and it was a last ditch effort. Has nothing to do with not dealing with the consequences so put YOUR morals aside....

OP said the dude didnt want the kid and the chick is a bitch. Why on earth wouldnt you do everything to NOT bring a kid into a situation where his father doesnt want him and his mother is bat-shit crazy?

No kid. End of story.


FWIW: My roommate was in this story. Didnt want the kid but had him and of course loves him and all, but the baby-momma is all kinds of crazy. Has kids with other guys, legal trouble, money problem, etc... Its bad man. Plus its held the guy back from all kinds of career opportunities. Thats my birth control, looking at him.

I always wondered if it was possible to elect to be a single father, rather then pay child support or deal with a crazy ex forever.

Almost all of us who are dating stand to have this happen, but I feel its important to raise your own to make a positive impact on society.

I still remember my freshman year of college. . .

The RA for my floor sat us all down in the first week and said "you guys are all going to get good jobs. Always wrap your dick. Some women are so crazy that they will try to get pregnant to trap you into marrying them because they want a guy with a good job."
