I decided to keep it. I got guitar center to give me a bit of money back. If the neck ever goes, I can buy a 60's rosewood neck and make it a bit of a cool bastard, and still have paid a competitive price for it after buying the new neck.

yeah, i have a reissue and think it's awesome. Great tone and can go from glassy clean to a bit of crunch with ease. At 30 watts, the tone is really easy to manage as well.

not handwired. I'd love a handwired one, but I have no idea if it matters. i just like the idea. the tone is already sublime, the worst part about it is the fact that I live in NYC and the amp is upstate.

yes it matters. it not only matters it makes all the difference in the world. it's the electronic equivalent of the difference between laminate wood acoustics and those made of solid wood, or shitty electrics made of whatever kind of godawful wood is underneath all that crappy paint and those made of aged and selected tone woods lacquered and finished with non-restrictive stains.

I am an admitted tone nazi as I was schooled and "shown the light" so to speak in a professional vintage shop and studio... but once you're able to tell the difference there is no going back. circuit boards sound like shit... period.

I think Bill Finnegan would disagree that this is always the case, though it has always been my impression as well.

Circuit boards tend to take up signal path, eliminating that opens up the sound more. Basically the faster and less interupted the signal from the string to the speaker the better.

I have a standard mexican fender jazz bass with a badass II bridge. I bought it because at the time fender didnt make the american standard  jazz in lefty. Reckon its worth upgrading?

of course nothing is absolute, I agree origenesprit. I have a few select digital tricks and toys but like pB said the cleaner the signal the better the TONE. nothing sounds worse to me than some shitty laminate Ibanez plugged into some Rocktron processor with a Line 6 or Peavey to top it off. really it just sounds terrible. hardwired, true bypass, all analog tube shit is the way to go for me. I actually have some great gear i'd love to post... if I ever make it home to take some pix to post I will.

I'm just waiting for pB to say... "Bill Finnegan... who the fuck is that??!" happy.gif or do you only do that in the celeb thread?

I'll tell you, and this is just my personal experience, that as far as true bypass goes, I don't rate its importance. Maybe my ears just aren't snobby enough, but I have no problem loading my pedalboard with Boss pedals (which I do - HM2, DD2, PN2) - I just don't hear the tone suckage. I actually prefer buffers when it comes to overdrive pedals, especially - I can't stand the pop that comes along with True Bypass pedals, and even companies who say they go out of their way to eliminate it are unsuccessful (I'm looking at you, Analogman King of Tone v4).
