I have two 76 Explorer reissues (Cherry Red, Ebony), bought the second with the intention of swapping out the pickups for some variety but I literally haven't touched it since the day I bought it haha.
That may sound misleading, but the Gibson Explorer is my personal favorite electric guitar (outside of holy grail guitars). The Explorer is perfect for what I do (Prog Rock, Harder Rock). I love the shape, the most comfortable guitar I've ever played STANDING hands down. The shape makes the fin kind of like an armrest, so you can just rest your forearm on it and strum forever- But just like the V, it's pretty much useless sitting lol.
Like an above poster said, pickups are hot/punchy. My Cherry Red Explorer is my workhorse guitar and I'll always keep the stock pickups in them. Def experiment with one. Honestly, the cleans are decent too. I really think it's a suitable guitar for almost any genre, you can def play blues on it. I mean, Clapton used one briefly, though he sawed the fin off... I think the Explorer just tends to stay within harder genres because the shape sells it as a that kind of guitar.
