Passed on the Cambridge 30, found a Marshall JTM30 combo on local craigslist for $200. Good deal?

The great thing about working on building sites: Free mats. It's not 2 platforms at different heights but sloped up towards the back, just enough for a power supply underneath. Btw, Cioks make good units, and you can switch power (240v here in Aus). I bought a used DC10.

Don't bite. Buying a used JTM30 combo is like buying a house with 25 years of flood damage with no insurance policy.

Those things have so many problems I can't even count. Overheating, frequent tube blowouts, bad solder point, bad contacts, dirty jacks, unreliable speakers, constant transformer failures, cheap pcb... You name it.

Assuming all that is fixed you have yourself a good amp. $800 later....

I love the champ! Especially with a Strat. The speaker needs to be reconed, and it did shock me yesterday, so it really needs to go to a tech but I'm loving it anyway.

In case anyone was curious, John Mayer is an excellent guitarist.

I've heard that but for some reason I really cannot stand him.

he really is a superb guitarist. unofortunately, he ranks right up there with musicians i probably could not stand spending 5 minutes with.

on the flip side, I'd love to spend 5 minutes with Lil Jon.

Really? With JM you can talk about Pateks, Visvim and whiskey all day long. He's pretty SF-approved, actually.

fair point, and in reality he'd probably be awesome to hang out with since we'd get drunk on whiskey, talk amps, talk guitars, talk watches, talk titties, etc.

He stuck pretty much to that '64 sunburst Strat all last night with the tortoise pickguard. He played a sonic blue Strat on one song, a duesenberg on one song, a tele on one song, and the Black One on gravity but he's really digging that '64.

Lots of auto-wah, too. I think he's using the Q-tron +, but I wonder if he's tried the new Mu-FX from the Mutron guy.

TC Houston has a huge hard on for Mayer. He is very good though. I have said my friend's quote in the past that made me laugh: "He's a just a frat guy who knows jazz chords."

I like the fact that he's so outspoken and kind of a prick especially to the media. It makes me lol.

I actually hung out with John for about an hour in 2007. He was playing a small show at Eddie's Attic and I was opening. Really cool guy. He seems to put up a front whenever there's a camera or reporter around. In person he's just a nice dude. I think people confuse his high intelligence for ego. Dude is just naturally witty. He literally can't help it. Sometimes I think it comes out wrong and he doesn't mean it.

That rig rundown is pretty old - he's using two Two Rocks and the Dumble now, and he's using fewer pedals.
