Any insights (or links to outside resources) on what to look for in a used LP?

Epiphone or Gibson (is there a period where the epiphones are particularily bad/good)?

I'd like to have an LP, and am not stricken by the only-new bug (although I am stricken by the wanting it cheaper even if it means someone else owned it bug)...

edit: what I am trying to say is: can I get a better deal than what piob got if I am willing to look at older/used instruments?

Buying a new guitar is stupid. Especially for what new Gibsons are going for. Your budget depends on the level of instrument and such, but in general the historics are high quality.

i have a historic goldtop, and in the 10-12 hours I've spent playing it, I liked it quite a bit.

Again, I'm not "only new." I'm "only new" when I think there is a high chance of me getting ripped off in the used market and I think there is with guitars.

prices of the new stuff these days is where the real rip off is

my voat a while back was for the previous generation 401. The main reason I like the 40C andw ould consider it is because of the power break in back, which the 401 doesn't have. I'd totally buy used as well.

the amount of trading that guitarists and musicians do with their gear is really high, so the used market is always very active. the most dangerous segment seems to be the vintage Fender market (pre-1969 mostly), which is very volatile price wise and with lots of counterfeits.

oh, just today, my father picked up an early 90's JCM900 head. 100W that he will cut to 50W.

It's trite, but I just have to QFT this^^. No reason to buy new whatsoever with so many good, used options floating around. Let someone else take the hit as they carry the guitar out of the store.

Perfect example of what I'm saying.
